Disable speakers on laptop not headphone jack...
-
Does anyone know of software that will disable my laptop speakers but not the headphone jack? I want the following: 1. If head-phones are jacked into laptop sound comes out of headphones. 2. If I unplug headphones no sound comes out of anything. 3. If I plug the headphones back in then sound comes out. I've messed with every setting I can in the control panel and none of them seem to work.

Did you look in the BIOS?

Nope. Unless you have a machine that lets you independently control headphone and speaker volume, there is physically a cutoff from the speakers (or, probably nowadays, a sense line) that disables the audio feeding the amplifiers to the speakers when the headphones are jacked in, and there's no soft control over that feature, AFAIK. I had a similar need a while back, and solved it by using one audio device for speakers and another for headphones. But then, that was a desktop system, so adding a second audio device was no big deal. Still, you might want to look into the USB audio devices out there - some of them are pretty small, and you'll probably get a good deal better quality than what your laptop has built-in.

Well, on a desktop, you could simply turn off the speakers and just stick the headphones into the CD drive if you're listening to an audio CD that is. Jeremy Falcon

Unless your laptop has some special hardware (& software that interacts with that hardware) there is no physical way apart from: Pliers or a slightly more sophisticated way: Building a little circuit which interfaces with the USB / Serial Port / Other I/O pin which allows you to switch it on or off. Best bet is (if you absolutely must have it):
- Open case
- Find speakers
- Find wires to speakers
- Get STDP switch (or is it DPST), basically a switch that is made from two isolated switches but operated by the same physical switch. (if that made any sense :) )
- Cut wires and solder switch in
- Find somewhere to put the switch :-D
- Close lid
- Pray

I only need it on a temporary basis. I have a really nice MP3 player sitting right next to me it's just missing the power cord it went into storage.

Go to your local electroics shop and buy a loose headphone plug (or rip the plug off an old, broken set of headphones.) When you unplug the headphones, plug in the loose headphone plug (no wires connected) - this will cut off the signal to the speaker. Modern electronics will not be harmed by this infinite-impedance load.

A very out of the box solution! Thank you very much. That's a great idea.

If you don't mind something sticking out, you could get an "extension" thing.. sort of like a Y-splitter (two-fer, whatever you want to call it  ) only maybe one only? that way, since something is plugged in, it won't play unless you have something plugged into the extension as well :)
