Heh. One would hope. But that would require a healthy dose of this thing they call "optimism". :-D

Take a look at Source. This is probably one of the most powerful game engines available. As to programming it, there are support forums for it. If you want any of us to teach you how to program games then ask us for our hourly rates. ;P Ed

If people cannot help you then they tend not to reply. This is not because they are not listening to you but because they don't know the answer. It would be very noisy here if someone posted a question and got a reply from every member saying "Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question". Sometimes people need you to clarify your question, as happened in a previous thread. But, even after that clarification it is no guarantee that someone is able to help you. Again, the lack of replies isn't because people are being rude, it would, as above, get very noisy if you got a reply from everyone reading it saying "Sorry, I still can't help you".

That is a great thing. However, trying to build a role playing game is a massively complex task. When I was 16 I tried and I managed a very simple game (on a ZX Spectrum, if you are curious), and also I should say that I'd been programming for almost 8 years by that point. I've never tried making a role playing game since. If you have just started programming then I would suggest you start with something simpler. For example, I've just bought a guitar so I can learn to play. At the moment I can play 3 chords and it takes me quite a few seconds to switch between them and then a lot of finger adjusting so that the notes sound good. If I went on a guitar website and said "I just started learning the guitar. I want to play Bohemian Rhapsody like Brian May, how do I do that?" I would most likely be laughed off the forum, or at best given the advice that I have a long way to practice yet. I would suggest that you have a long way to practice before getting into complex systems like RPGs. I would suggest starting with simpler games like noughts-and-crosses or hangman[^] and build up from there. So, learn to walk before you run, work through tutorials, design and build simple programs that demonstrate some aspect of an RPG game (In another post you mention an inventory - so learn about collections, arrays, lists and so on) and eventually you can start putting all that together and actually create an RPG game. I hope this helps.

Look, I'm 19. I started coming to this website 4 years ago...when I was 15. Want some advice? Learn how to type properly. Most of us have very little tolerance for this idiotic "txt spk" where every instance of "you" is abbreviated to "u". Learn to capitalize. Learn to use punctuation. These are basic things they teach you in high school. Don't come on here and start whining about how nobody is listening to you. Don't demand help. If you ask for it, and you don't get it, then odds are that nobody has the time or energy to invest in learning this byond system to help you. But complaining about it makes you look like a spoiled brat. Also, you posted a request for help with code in the Lounge, clearly violating the nice red text at the top of the page saying that you should not ask programming questions in the Lounge. We don't look kindly on people who can't follow such basic directions as that. And if you don't take time to read the basic instructions, you're not going to be a very good programmer.

No. None of us know how to program for this byond system you keep talking about. We do development with real world programming languages like C++, C#, etc. Regardless of whether or not byond uses a similar language to script their games, we would still have to invest time into learning the environment. And that's time that, most likely, none of us have or are willing to spend on this system.

Wrong. Byond is a script kiddie program. It doesn't enable you to make real games. Real games are written in real languages. Not some byond scripting language.

First, what you meant by "I suck at programming" was "I suck at programming". At this point, you're much more mature than most Visual Basic "programmers" that refuse to admit that they suck at programming. In the end, though, you still suck. Find another profession and pay someone from rent-a-coder to "help you with your game". Second, I'm more than 3 times older than you, and here's some help with the math - you're 16, so 3 x 16 = 48, and since I'm older than 3x your age, you can assume I'm older than 48. Now, go work on your times tables. Third, I haven't lived with my mother since I was in the 3rd grade, I've never played DOD, I've put my life on the line for my country, and I've been a programmer since long before you were a dull imitation of a twinkle in your deadbeat father's eye. Ok? So stuff your game up your ass, little boy, and go back to picking your nose in the corner. When an adult wants you to speak, we'll smack you in the back of your pointed little head with a shovel. ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. If you're not here to race, go the hell home - don't come here and grumble about going too fast. The reason everybody flames you is for two main reasons: 1. You posted your question into the wrong forum 2. You make it sound like you want us to make your game. 2. is probably not intended, but that's what it looks like to us... I can give you following advice though: Programming games on your own isn't that simple, in fact it's pretty advanced programming. Learn to master the language you're programming in and try some simple things first. Then build up slowly. good luck. No hurries, no worries.

ok well I have tried other websites but no one gives me an answer can one of you that replied to me try BYOND? The code looks like this here is some of my half-made game.... mob icon = 'people.dmi' //make it so all mobs will be created with the person icon bug //new prototype icon = 'bug.dmi' //override the parent's icon, which was 'person.dmi' monsters icon = 'monsters.dmi' var HP = 30 //define a new variable called HP, with a value of 30 wealth Login() icon_state = gender //when a player logs in, get them the right icon state for ..() //the gender of their key. Then call the parent! proc DeathCheck() if (HP <= 0) world << "Guest killed [src]" del(src) //delete whatever just died verb attack(mob/M as mob in oview(1)) //attack a mob within 1 tile of you usr << "You attack [M]!" //send this message to the usr oview() << "[usr] attacks [M]!" //send this message to everybody else var/damage = rand(1,10) //assign a random # to a new variable world << "[damage] damage!" //tell the damage to the world M:HP -= damage //take away the damage from M M:DeathCheck() //check for death with a proc say(msg as text) //what the usr says is passed into "msg" as text world << "[usr]: [msg]" //the world sees chatroom-like output :(( TJ Slayer

I am, but I wanted to use an example that included his age so that he'd have a solid mathematical basis for understanding that I'm not 30, and 3x16 was the closes I could get without risking the possibility of losing him when I added 2 to 48. :) ------- sig starts "I've heard some drivers saying, 'We're going too fast here...'. ok, I am sorry for acting like a whiney spoiled brat. First of all, now everyone can stop sending me hate messages on this thread. But I only wanted help with programming. Yes; I am not very good, but that gives you guys no right to make fun of me or the things I have said, nor how I type my words. For instance instead of "you" I type "u." Honestly, who the hell cares how I type, as long as the message get's out there to the world. Second I saw a message from someone who told me that he tried to make a RPG, but ended up with a small one; and that I shouldn't do an RPG. So since RPG's are to complex for me then what should I start doing? any ideas are welcome.(If they are a nice message not hate messages) But to let you know I did not intend to make it seem like i wanted you to make my game, just show me some examples maybe give me a sight about starting game engines that I could use I don't know. I am just a starting programmer who wants to make something of myself, and I started making games; thats what I love, so please could you lend me a hand and stop being so cruel.:(( Slayer

You either didn't read the helps on the site or you *really* suck at programming. http://www.byond.com/docs/guide/[^] This link more than covers your questions. You just need to bone up and do the work required. There's not a real programmer here or anywhere else that didn't sweat there butt's off to get up to speed on the language and the structs of the language. You really need to find a quite place to read and work the examples. You'll be so glad you did and come to think of it... We will to.

I only read CP for the articles. Code-frog System Architects, Inc.
