The original beta 1 antispyware ms had bought and changed some was pretty ok with most of it's protection and I think this new version of it (defender beta 2) is really not any where close to the protection beta 1 was. This version (defender beta 2) is awful let alone it's endless load of bugs. It might be ready as of beta 3 for somewhat reliable use but not now.

Is this in any way associated with the virus protection company Microsoft bought a year and a half ago? (I think the company had been making virus protection for linux).

Yes. The new version, called Windows Defender, has a number of improvements over the first beta. The UI has changed quite a bit, and you no longer have to be an administrator to run it.
