Its been a whilst since I’ve bothered with gaming... Wondering if some one could recommend some kind of strategy game to run on a bottom end laptop for a long commute!
It depends how bottom end you mean. What is bottom end today was top of the line a few years ago. You might be interested in one of the older versions of Command and Conquer. They are currently selling the whole set of versions for one low price. It's a legendary strategy game with little tanks and soldiers and buildings where you build a base and do battle by directing your units all around the map. It's a great blend of strategy and action, but if your laptop is very old, then probably only the earliest versions will run. Rich

For a bottem end laptop, I would recommend any game in the Command & Conquer series EXCEPT generals. If you don't have a at least a 128MB graqphics card generals will make you cry. Civilization 3 should also run well.

That was close was just about to go out and buy generals! The spec of the laptop is a 1.5ghz 512mb 64mb graphics... :( Cheers!
C&C Generals is very graphics intensive. Most of the older strategy games use 2D bitmaps, but generals uses detailed 3D graphics.

Which old C&C would you recommend there seems to be a lot of them kicking around.. Do they all run ok on XP? Just downloading the Ages Of Empires 3 demo... my laptop just scrapes minimum spec.

i would highly recommend Age of empires 1 & 2 but i doubt you will enjoy strategy games much on a laptop without a mouse (assuming that you won't use mouse while commuting).
C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot; C++ makes it harder, but when you do, it blows away your whole leg

Starcraft is cool on that machine spec...bloody fast too! Populous III is also a goer, though to get it to run under XP you'd need a patched version (the game runs just fine under XP, but its copy protection doesn't...) Thgat game is evil... it's probably not suitabel for a commute, because of the"just one mroe turn" feature.

Actually, Generals WILL run on that system. My laptop is a 1.8 ghz with 512 mb of ram with 64 mb Geforce FX5200 and it runs it quite well on medium. You may not be able to turn everything on, (turn off water reflections, and shadows) but it will run pretty well on that system. Depends on how low end it is. On an AMD 1.4Ghz and half a gig, it really didn't run fast towards the end. I'm not kidding you when I tell you that I made tea (including the act of boiling water - no preheated water!) between the rounds. Civ3 requires a lot of CPU once the tough gets going. -- Pictures[^] from my Japan trip.

Ok, I'm running Generals on AMD Turion 1.8 + 512mb (of which 64mb is being shared for the graphics) + Ati 200m (x300 chipset with the 64megs mentioned before) .. oh, and it's running at 1400x1050 (the native resolution of this monitor:)) at a very impressive speed! So it's not *that* hard on the specs ;) Regards, Tadej ps: and it's a great game, as well, I recommend it

Tht's true. I remember playing a giant size map with max players... by the end even on a 3.4GHz P4 the turns took 5minutes+

Which one was that - i think there were three? I remember playing the first one about 7 years ago... it got more and more difficult and I never completed it :(. I bought the second one not that long ago, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet.
