I have been a windows developer for a long time, however, I now need to look at Linux development... Are there any resources (web or paper) you would recommend, for someone who has never even used a Linux system, to learn how the OS holds together, and how to start writing software to run on a Linux system... Thanks.

Learn JAVA and install the JRE on the Linux environment - this way your programs work an any Java enabled platform.
