The icons available at http://www.famfamfam.com[^], like the silk collection[^] are quite nice, and completely free for use.    You can also change them as you see fit, and they are pretty much the basis for all of the images that will be in the next version of one of my products. (I will be donating my modified ones back into the collection, in fact.)    Note - they are 16x16 icons, but they scale nicely.  I would recommend using a more full-featured application like the GIMP or Paint Express[^] to do the scaling.  Using something like Paint will require you doing your own anti-ailiasing.  BTW: Paint Express has some very nice features that make converting bitmaps to high-color icons really easy, as well as scaling icons, and alpha-channel operations (so you can easily create a dimmed "cold" image bitmap for your toolbar) - well worth the money, IMHO.    Peace! -=- James

One thing to watch out for...  There are a few sites out there that say: "Free Icons", but be sure to check the fine-print carefully.  Many of them are actually "Free Web Icon" sites, and do not allow the icons to be used in an application, only on a web site.    Some also release the icons under certain restrictions, such as not being able to modify them in any way (including color depths, scaling, etc.), or licensing terms like the GPL, or have certain acknowledgement requirements (which usually are not bad at all).    Just remember to read carefully before just taking any images, and if you cannot find any text indicating the terms of use, ask. :)    Peace! -=- James

Man, this icon question needs to go into the FAQ along with FamFamFam as an answer as we have given it out at least three times in the past few months. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry! K(arl) wrote: oh, and BTW, CHRISTIAN ISN'T A PARADOX, HE IS A TASMANIAN!

Try this http://www.icongrabber.com-http.com/[^], Icon grabber is a tool used to grab icons from any application. You can extract the icon, modify and use it. Hope this will give you some idea. Thanks, Thiagarajan Rajendran .Net Developer -- modified at 13:03 Monday 27th March, 2006

Try the tango project, the icons are under a Creative Commons license and are available in 16x16, 32x32 and as svg's should you want a different size. They're all nicely broken down into categories as well. http://tango-project.org/[^]

If you have VS2005 microsoft gives you some as "Registration Benifits". The catch is that you have to spend 5 minutes filling out a form.
