Sure. I get that. But given the choice between a tree being cut down and a child being raped or starving, I know where I want my money to go. To be honest, I used to also support greenpeace ( with a lesser amount than I do world vision ), and I stopped because I got sick of their constant aggressive street campaigns. If I get stopped by those people, I will also tell them that they used to have my money, but I got sick of being bullied on the streets. I increased my world vision support, and I'm very comfortable with that. Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Well, I can understand that. Just leave a few trees left for us to hug.

Oh man, it remimds me of the salvation army during Christmas time over here. Yeah, I agree, bullying is dumb.

That's cool. I think if everyone did their part in helping to make a world a better place in the way they set fit, we'd all be better off. Maybe everyone one of us wouldn't agree on every little detail, but by and large, we'd be moving in the right direction at least. Jeremy Falcon

So what? What has that got to do with this discussion? They wouldn't be farming coca if there wasn't a demand for cocaine.

I just don't see how people can get a kick out of beating an animal senseless for no reason at all. I mean, I'm not a pro-animal activist by any means, but seeing the seals in that video just breaks my heart. Jeremy Falcon

It's the annual seal harvest.
Why not at least make it so that the seals are put to rest peacefully? Add whatever cost it takes to get the seals peacefully as an expense of doing business. I think killing animals for vanity is stupid, but that video is just inhumane.

But at least that's not intentional.
Sure it is. Oh, i know what you mean - i'm sure very few harvesters head out to the fields with the primary goal of mutilating fuzzy little rabbits and leaving their twisted, dying bodies to rot in the sun... But, as long as there's hay in the fields, there's gonna be rabbits, and no matter how much you regret it, a few are gonna die during harvest. You either harvest and kill rabbits, or you don't, and something else kills them. Or they live. Something like that. Sorry, not trying to be flip. But that's life, you know? Living things die. Sometimes it's the ugly, biting, disease-carrying things, and sometimes it's the cute fluffy things. I'm neither for nor against seal clubbing. I don't live there, i don't work there, i don't know what all goes into the decision someone has to make that leads them to go out and club seals. But i do know that most of us have made a decision at one point that has led, directly or indirectly, to the death of another living creature.

Both you and Jeremy are correct. Fine if you want to harvest the skin of seals - that's no different from getting meat from cows. It is rather cold blooded to kill the seals like that. Did you see that poor seal that sprawled for quite some time? If that didn't bother you, I'm afraid to ask what does...

WTF, are you people really that blind? This is not about food!!! It's about a fashion coat and needlessly torturing animals to get it. Jeremy Falcon
I think it's about both food and fur actually. However, IIRC, the choice of killing method is because it's easier to harvest the fur. Less damage to the fur this way. The sight of that little fellow who sprawled in his own geyser of blood made me feel sick. Just because some rich bitch wanted a spiffy new coat, and a "hunter" not having enough brains to devise a gentler method of killing the seal. :(

I hate hunt in general. I think hunters (even sport hunters) deserve to get killed by their own rifles. Why the hell you should like hunt? :~

We are destroying our planet. We are killing animals in such a brutal way. We are always at war with other humang beings. What's the worst thing? Please don't answer. It's only a matter of point of view. And "local" needs. ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA]

I don't quite understand why some things bother me more than others. Seeing someone with a broken arm gives me the chills like few other things. But regardless, i don't like killing animals, and i didn't enjoy watching that clip. I'm bothered by seeing the rabbits that get hit by cars around here, i'm bothered by the sensation of a mouse skull crushing under my boot as i end the misery begun by a trap, i'm bothered by the sounds and smell of chickens as they're killed and cleaned, i'm bothered by those soft eyes in a deer carcase waiting to be dressed. Heck, i'm bothered by a lot of things. Some of them i accept are necessary, and others i avoid or decry. I guess what brought me to reply to this thread was all the shocked and horrified replies. I've never lived anywhere near seals, i know nothing about how they life or why they're killed, and from the replies here it doesn't seem like many others do either. There was nothing in that video explaining what was being done, why, or why it should/shouldn't be done. Just gruesome, shocking images of death. Well, there's death all around us. Why is this so much more deserving of anger?

It'd be much more fun to make it equal by giving the moose a rifle. Montreal great Guy Lafleur, quoted by CBC on being mugged while vacationing recently in Buenos Aires: "I didn't have any time to react before I got a sucker-punch in the eye. It was like one of the players from the Bruins."

Because it's a messy method. Heck, rats are given a less painful death than seals!

It's not the why I'm questioning. It's the how.
