Unions and local government: if we scrapped the lot of them we'd all be richer, happier, and greener. :suss:

I don't know about that. Scrapping local government yes, but unions I'm not sure about. I used to get high on life until I realized that life was cut with morons - Unknown
The only thing unions do is lobby for strikes and industrial action. The sooner we get rid of them, the better the world will be.

In South Africa they also lobby for jobs. Without them there is a risk of capatilism over-optimizing at the expense of a decrease in employment. I used to get high on life until I realized that life was cut with morons - Unknown
Some morons are voting you a 1 and that's lame. (I'm going to pull you up now.) Unions are not great but the one thing they do is protect your job when your supervisor, manager, company may not want to. That's good (I think). But it really forces companies to be rigid (instead of flexible) in how they operate which is not good (I think). I'm extremely glad unions are around and while I'll never work for one I do believe they add up to a positive for the U.S. and it's workers even though some of them get *very* stupid. Anyway, it's the lounge and I think that you should be able to be pro-union, anti-union, pro-homosexual, anti-homosexual or whatever you wish so long as you are polite in your discussions (and you have been). If you are going to be rude (and you haven't) get ready for some 1's or several and drive yourself over to the soapbox and have it out in a good ol' (now Shog, correct me if I'm wrong but I think I put that apostrophe in the right place.) fashion rumble with your shirt sleeves rolled up. - Rex

I think the whole concept of unions is good... as a concept. Here in Mexico (and I doubt it has not happenned in other parts of the world) unions monopolize the jobs in a certain industry (you won't be able to get that job without being a member of the union, and for that you have to pay, and.... you get the idea.) Also, the union leaders only try to benefit themselves (the leader for the mining industry union supposedly kept 55 million USD that were given to the union for the workers.) I remember watching on TV a union leader in Mexico asking for more money from the government because all the union workers were poor. When he finished his speech, he got on his Mercedes Benz S-Class and drove away. That makes me sick  X|

Not just Mexico. It's exactly the same in Australia. Although there is a law preventing compulsory union membership, the unions put so much pressure on employers to not employe non-members, that they basically have no choice. Union members often refuse to work with non-members, and of course the union organises a strike for every member of the union, regardless of whether they work for that employer or not. It's a sick, sick system and needs to be abolished or rigidly controlled so the unions have no power at all.

That's just asinine. would therefore require less labour than the traditional kind I'd think the union workers would embrace anything requiring less labor. ;) BW

I was thinking more of the stereotypical union "worker" standing around 6 hours per day. BW

He was the leader of the union. If you only join one as a regular worker, you get to pay for that S-class

Yeah, I know. It's like everything really. The guys at the top take all the creme and everyone else has to harvest the crop. Which is why being self-employed is awesome. You side-step all of it and are in your own virtual heaven (or hell... at times) that you can do what you like in so long as you make labor laws and all that happy.

One example here is the oil industry union. Pemex (the goverment-owned oil monop company) has about 3500 workers per platform. It has been proved that platforms of that size can work with about 700 workers. But the union (and collective work contracts) won't let anyone be fired. I know unions try to defend workers, but you can't force an employer keep an employee if he doesn't need him, it's doing more harm to the business and at the end it could go bankrupt and everybody would be without jobs. Well, unions can make the business keep that employee X| Another case here is the Social Security Union. The current laws say that after working around 25 to 30 years in the SS you can retire and earn a lifelong pension. With current expected-life raising, the liabilities have been raising so much as to put in danger the financial viability of the system. Also, private businesses pay to the SS so that their workers can also retire and get their pension payment. Current laws allow the SS ex-workers to get their payments from private-business money. About one ow two years ago there was a bill in Congress trying to change that law, so that *new* SS workers would only get they pension funds from the money they paid and not from private businesses. This would apply only to new workers entering the SS after the law was passed, and current workers would stay the same. Well, the union leaders didn't allow it. The SS threatened to go on strike. I saw on TV an interview with a SS worker who said they were going to strike because the government wanted to cancel their pension... even if for him everything would stay the same way as always. I just hope the Intelectix Employee Union doesn't form soon  :)

The only purpose of such a union would be to guarantee that quality tacos and pizza were available to all regardless of race, religion, creed, tattoos, cars, women, children, etc... Good tacos and pizza for everyone ... OR DEATH!!!
