Can't explain, but that is exactly the reason why I hardly ever sleep more than 8 - 8.5 hours. When sleeping more than that I'm normally tired the whole following day.

I know what you mean, I'm trying to get no more than 8 hours of sleep but I rearly manage that. I usually sleep about 5-6 hours. For the last two weeks I slept an average of 4 hours including the weekends because I had to work. Well last afternoon I went for a jogging session because the weather was just fine:). After that I started reading some a specification document for a new project and fell asleep. Woke up 16 hours later and couldn't believe it. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

:wtf: I can't remember the last time I slept that much. The funny thing is I feel tired. Probably it's because I slept too much. Anybody has an explanation for this? regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

There's a whole bunch of hormones and other chemicals your body produces when you sleep. It's not so much a matter of how long you sleep but where you woke up in your sleep cycle. Right now all those chemicals that aide in deep R.E.M. sleep must be active and you feel groggy. When I sleep more than 8 hours I feel amazing. Now explain that... The other day I cooked off 13 hours of sleep and woke up feeling great. I think it's a different experience for everyone...

Yeah, there's something fishy going on:-D. That's why I asked here in the hope that someone has an explanation that would clarify it. My example which contradicts what just happened is when I worked 24 non-stop and then had a sleep of 6 hours. That was a great sleep. I felt so great when I woke up, so full of energy. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

The body has a natural clock (the cirardian rythmn I think) and sleeping too long disrupts that. The tigress is here :-D

The sleep cycle is about 1.5 hours... so your sleep duration should be a multiple of 1.5 (e.g. 6, 7.5, 9). Waking up in the middle of a cycle might cause you feel tired during the day. And in my experience sleeping a lot can still leave you feeling tired during the day.

The last two times I worked for 24 hours it was actually 36, because I still had to work the next day. Horrible stuff. I used to get high on life until I realized that life was cut with morons - Unknown

I feel you. I also do that in two periods of the year. It's those times when I have exams at the university. I don't know how it's called in english. In romanian it's called "sesiune". Those times what usually happens is I go to work in the morning, come home, continue learning for the exam all night, in the morning go to the exam then to work again. Nasty. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

Actually that does matter. But as you said, waking up during REM will also let you feel sleepy. Although, REM is long since over with after 16 hours - which is how long he slept. Jeremy Falcon

Don't oversleep, unless you didn't for sleep for a week or something and just can't get out of bed. Oversleeping will shorten your lifespan just as much as under sleeping will. Anyway, to the point. Like has been said already, your body has a natural cycle. If you don't keep that and sleep irregular then your body won't get the deep sleep it needs and you'll constantly be turning all night, etc. In fact your body will try and keep you asleep longer to make up for not getting good sleep. This is most likely what the problem is. You're tired because your body was never properly rested. Just being unconscious doesn't mean it was. If you want to sleep better just start sleeping at the same time. Use your alarm clock to make sure it's not too much time. Doing something active every couple of days and most likely, unless you're really stressed, you should sleep a lot better AFTER your body adjusts. Jeremy Falcon

:) Doesn't the specific period the exams took place have a name? Like there is the first semester, second semester, holiday, the specific time the exams took place has a name in romanian (sesiune). Don't you have a name for that? regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

We just call it Finals week. And we have one for each semester or quarter (my school happens to be on a quarter system), so it's usually finals week of [Fall|Winter|Spring] [Year]. :)
