Waking up after an operation to my willy, tied to the bed panicking, wanting to go home and play with my red firetruck (I don't even know if I have one). At least that's what I always think of first. I have a dim earlier one of.. lying in bed sick, asking for a cookie from my (4th) birthday presents. But the other one has virtually overshadowed everything else. In a blatant attempt to create a Lounge thread that gets mentioned in Jordon's newsletter, I pose the question: What is your earliest memory? Mine: Burning my hand on the stove. Well peterchen's reply probably just knocked it out of contention for Jordon's family newsletter. ;) I can't tell which is earlier but I have two early memories from my childhood in Zimbabwe. One is at the Paul Barn preschool (kindergarten). They had some rabbits in a hutch, chickens in another cage and some guinea pigs running around. I had my little brown suitcase with my name on it and I had one of those safe-to-spill-on brown overalls also with my name on. And a little brown hat. I was walking to the carpark to be picked up on a bicycle by the garden boy. The other memory is sitting on the same bicycle, being pedalled home by the garden boy and my ankle getting caught in the front-wheel. I don't remember the pain much but I remember lying down at home afterwards with my swollen ankle on a big, orange cushion. I don't have a very good memory though, just flashes and snippets from before I was about 12. My sister however can remember almost everything from when she was 3 years old. I often wonder what it has changed for me that my two earliest memories are of weakness and pain. At least, I usually go silent when people talk (face to face) about "earliest childhood memories". ;) It's easier to write than to say.

That is interesting since I'd been an IBM 360/85 FORTRAN programmer (punch card). Moved to a PDP 11/45 which I wrote an interface to the little HP using HP Basic. I went on to work with the DEC 11/70's, and DEC/VAX 11/780 machines for several years. And now Dot.Net - how cool is that? It's hard to believe how far computing has come, and can't wait to see where we can go. The first hard drive - a 5Mb Iomega brick. IBM PC/5150 with 2 360kb 5.25 drives and a cassette port. The first gigabyte class hard drive unit was $3000 Bernoulli boxes anyone? AST AboveBoard/SixPack boards to boost memory from 512kb to 640. - So you could do something really cool - a VDISK... I still some have interesting software including: DOS 1.1, Lotus 1.a, DBase II R:Base 4000 WordStar DisplayWrite MultiMate (boy did that name get some ribbing) The thumbdrive I carry is 200 times bigger than that first PC hard drive, what could we possibly do with all that space (5Mb) -- modified at 16:01 Wednesday 5th April, 2006

My first computer had 6 mhz (but it had 12mhz with turbo), a 10mB hard drive, and 1 mB of onboard memory. I also remember a awful ribbon cable printer. My dad printed all of the graphics from printshop 1.0 off and made this decent sized stack of paper that was all attached. Brett A. Whittington Application Developer

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing I was around the age of 4 or 5. I was supposed to take a nap in the afternoon, but found out my older brother was going off with one of his friends somewhere. So I pretended to sleep long enough to fool my mother, and slipped out after my brother. I managed to follow them for a bit, but got lost after a turn or two. I remember crying in front of some house. After that I remember a lady giving me lemonade and cookies in her kitchen, and then riding along in a police car. Apparently, I lied to the policeman about my name. I picked that moment to remember not to talk to(ie. trust) strangers rather than earlier when the nice lady was feeding me tasty treats. Anyway, I used my Dad's name, thinking that would throw off the nosey policeman. Luckily, he was more clever than I, and returned me home. BW

I was telling my parents about a room with circular stairs where a painting (which I described) was on the wall. My mom said I couldn't remember that, as it was the building where my dad worked until I was almost 6 months. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have described the situation in enough detail as to "implant" the memories. However, now, I can't remember yesterday. :) --G

My (younger by 5+ years) sister can remember things from my early childhood, and even talk with authority on some things that happened to our parents when they were children. :rolleyes: --G

You're a mere child. :) My first computer was an Ohio Scientific Challenger 1P with a 1 MHz 6502, 8K of ram (upgraded from 4K), a cassette interface for storage, and Microsoft ROM Basic version 1.0 which, shockingly, was full of bugs. My father had an Amiga, but I didn't really fool around with it. So I guess the earliest memory I had to myself was an IBM PS/2's 512k. I remember my first "girlfriend" in pre-school, Barbara. She was a very pretty little girl who actually remembered me when we met again in high school around 13 or 14 years later. Unfortunately, the flame had gone out for her. Not for me! I still can remember the little things we did together, like share lunch and nap on the same mat, around 55 years ago. Hmmm, my first computer was a Sinclair ZX-81 when I was 11 (1982), i had a 16k RAM pack for it that if you breathed too heavy nearby would thow a hissy fit and crash the computer losing whatever you had been doing since it last crashed, or, if you were very lucky, since it had been switched on. This was made worse by the fact that I didn't have a compatible tape recorder to save what I had been doing. From the ZX-81 I went on to get a much more refined and stable Commodore 64. 48k of memory? Sheer luxury!! My first computer was a Commodore PET (with the original old ROM!) which had 8k of memory and the cassette tape interface. The amazing thing, when I think about it now, is that with only 8k (which was for both program AND data) there were great programs available- word processors, spreadsheets, and some great games. Can't fit much of a program in 8k these days! By the way, I still have that Commodore PET, and yes, it still works!! Gary
