Well, it is official, the remnants of the once great Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, have been bought by the French company Alcatel. The inventor of the transistor, and the discoverer of the cosmic background radiation that proves the Big Bang theory, Bell Labs owned and operated state of the art facilities here in Holmdel New Jersey, that employed thousands of scientists, engineers, and researchers. After the breakup of AT & T, however, Lucent took posession of the facilities, and promptly mismanaged the facilities into the ground. My mom worked at the Holmdel facility for almost 15 years, and I had very many opportunities to visit the building and see many different aspects of its operation. So now we see the sad finale to the Bell Labs story. It is a great loss to the city, and the business community. :((

Add oddly enough, the phone companies are merging again back into big corporations (Verizon swallowed up GTE, Pac*Bell turned into SBC which got absorbed by AT&T). It's a cycle you can count on, just like the sunspots.

I thought I heard that SBC bought AT&T, and changed their name to AT&T. The baby bought the parent.

Are you saying that C and Unix were discovered, rather than invented? Interesting concept... "The programming language was there. All we had to do was to remove all the bad code from the set of all code, and voilà." ;)
