It's not that I love doing it. It can be a lot of work. I am however a member of a community and when someone abuses the rights that come with membership and I can possibly help then I will. It's not that I'm the lone ranger or anything nor do I want to be. I just have done this before prior to being self-employed (I did a lot of it at a company where the webserver kept getting hit.) and there are some basic things you can do to find people. A lot of it just comes down to social engineering. Pick up a phone make a few calls, talk to a few people and get what you need. If you are polite and can demonstrate/proove there is a problem (and in this case it's easy to do) most people will want to help you because many people are decent people. In the case of this guy he was *really* dumb. I won't explain what he did that was so dumb but I already know where he lives, his telephone number, college of graduation, college degree chosen, place of employment and employers contact information. I even have copies of his resumes. He was *REALLY* dumb but again that's about all there is to say. In most cases people don't really think when they are under the influence of anger and that mental-lapse allows a lot of people to be found out with some very basic research. - Rex

It is too easy to create anonymous new identities on CP. I am not sure what the solution is. check out VG.net: www.vgdotnet.com An animated vector graphics system integrated in VS.net

Making the email accounts require a valid email address, and making a liscense agreement would help.

It might help but I think the only thing that's really going to get the job done is to implement some kind basic monitoring scheme where actual members here delete/ban posts before they appear. For example if all members with less than 100 posts required moderation (approval) then this problem would disappear instantly. - Rex

Are you saying that all I need to do is make 101 smiley face posts [with no other content]that it is OK for me to then go off and slag anyone in sight once I am a "Posting Police" certified poster? I don't think that vigilantly tactics are the answer. I think that ignoring the poster would deprive them of the satisfaction of being recognized and thus making them ineffectual. They will soon grow tired of not being recognized and go off to "/." Or some other place they will receive recognition. I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopes

I suppose but not in the case I'm describing. ME: "We are having a problem with a user who came to our site two days ago at 5:50PM with this IP Address. He's making some posts that are vulgar and not at all in line with the spirit of the site, it's  members or it's owners. I've reported the IP address to the domain of origination for abuse but you and I both know that IP address is coming from your proxy which is being used by this user so we cannot ban him by IP. Would you have a problem forwarding this report on to his ISP on my behalf? I don't need to know any of the details but can you please report the abuse to his ISP for me?" If that's stalking you'll need to redefine the term at websters and a 1000 other places. To me that's called a responsible act warranted by an abusive members actions.

Obviously there's a tad more to it. If your suggestion were actually to work than many other sites would have stuck with it. The problem is it's not just one person it could be 10 or 100 all of them a unique problem in their own right.

Just because Steve was being pretty dumb [certainly one would expect more understanding from an engineering type] doesn't mean that stalking him, for whatever reason, is justified. It may even be illegal in the US? Maybe the Florida sun blinded him? That's the really *dumb* part that I won't give away to other stupid people that might follow in his footsteps. It was hardly stalking. It was more like, "Geez what a dummy, left a trail a mile wide and painted bright green." I also think stalking involves continued harassment. If I use that information to contact him once and ask him to stop I don't think that is harassment. If I use it again and again and again and don't let up then it is. I think this is a decent guy who just got mad over something and started shooting off at the mouth. I don't think he ever intended to register and do what he's now doing. Hopefully it's just a sanity check for him to take a breath and realize there's more to life than anger. If he would mellow a bit he might enjoy it here again. Never know... - Rex

- Rex

The thing that concerned me was the reference to work. If he should loose a job as a result of your advocacy you may be in some deep "DoDo". Just want to point that out because I know your intensions are good but sometimes terrible things happen to good people. Especially in a litigious society. I'm on-line therefore I am. JimmyRopes

I just let him know I have all the information. I asked him to politely stop. If there's anything else required after that then I'll let Chris handle it. It's not my place at all. It's Chris's place. I just want to get recipes off you guys. Have a place to hang out and get a touch of help when required. Aside from that I don't do this for money so I don't have the legal protection I need or anything and I wouldn't want it. I'll let real P.I.'s do it they enjoy it. I just like reminding people to be human and asking them to take a deep breath and step back. That's all. More than that and I'm not interested.:-D
