Its Friday and I am so frustrated about another product from Microsoft that looks like somebody did not spend too much time writing it: State Server! You need to go out of your way to make it work in a web farm environment and they you don’t have any control or an API to interrogate who is online or offline, you need to use SQL Server that is slower to do so. So I look for good alternatives to use. I thought, great time to support Code Project by purchasing one of their sponsors. So I went to: http://www.scaleoutsoftware.com/[^] to buy the Server State! And then they ask me for: $49,995 !!!!! Crap for 64 machine support is 50K? So for 50K I’ll spend my time writing a windows service to store sessions and cache! Just pissed off that I got to do it because the pricing is so off! Al My eMail control My Blog

So? That's less than $800 per server. Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. Literally. At least [with Wikipedia] you have the chance to correct the wiki -- Jörgen Sigvardsson -- modified at 17:24 Friday 14th April, 2006

You would sell your first and only child for a mere 50 grand:omg:

$800 per server? Don't you think is quite expensive for session state? Will you pay $50K for session state or you would write your own? Al My eMail control My Blog

Why don't you start selling a low-priced State Server alternative? I don't see dead pixels anymore... Yes, even I am blogging now!

Well I started writing it. But to sell something you need more than just write the code, there is marketing to let people know ... So I believe will become open source in a article at codeproject someday. Al My eMail control My Blog

Given what I've seen these utilities do, after perusing a couple links, it sounds like darn complicated stuff. That said, many times I've rolled my own because what I need is only a simple subset of the functionality that an expensive package offers, and more than the price, I simply don't want to be bound to something I don't have the source for and I don't want all the rest of the bloat. But in general, NEVER start a new project on Fridar, and never have a meeting except on Monday or Tuesday telling people what to do. Of course, I start a project on Friday after dinner and work on it all weekend! (Like that nullable masked edit control article I just wrote). Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. What my server state should do is pretty simple and should work in more than one app or computer. I changed the machine key for all servers to use the ServerState in MS. However I do not have access to that server state. The requierements for my server state are the followed: - Work in a Web Farm - Be cluster fail over, so instead of IP I added a serverstate.mydomain.com with 2 server or more (They shall talk between each other to sync the states in another port) - A Key defines the apps and computer groups - The server state shall have a API to get the users by sessions and the count of total users Pretty simple, how much for that solution: $50K I don't think so!!

This is SO true! Such a bad day today to start a project, makes me so tired. I'll spend the weekend thinking about it as well.

I gave up meeting one year ago. You want to talk to me, ask me questions, suggestions: send me an email. If I don't reply means the questions or suggestions were dumb! Better figure it for yourself. Al My eMail control My Blog
