So who leaves their computer on all the time or shuts it down when not in use? If you leave your computer on how much time passes before you have to reboot and what O.S. are you using? I leave mine on all the time except on vacation. Until I installed VS2005 I could leave Windows XP running for weeks and months without trouble. Do you shut down or just turn the monitor off? I have 3 Win2k machines that are always on and a WinXP laptop that get's shut down when not in use. I have to reboot the desktops about every 2-3 weeks, when they start to get sluggish, or lose the ability to see other computers on the network (haven't figured that one out yet). I power all computers down during lightening storms, but other than that, they're always on. The only problem I've had, was a system fan cratering after about 6 years. Crossing my fingers and backing up a lot... I think I would shut down more often if I had instant on, or fast computers, it just takes too long to boot up.

I leave mine on because the OS install is pretty old and entropy has set in, which makes boot time reallllly sllllllow.

I shutdown always just to save power. I don't agree with leaving them running just to save a few seconds waiting for bootup. And as for people who can't even be bothered to switch off their monitors X|

My wife's machine has been running 24/7 for almost six years (if you ignore power outages that are beyond our control). My laptop has been runing 24/7 for three years (even if you count the periods of power outage). My system runs 24/7, but I upgrade a lot so my uptime is interrupt as a result of that process. I have a new 2003 Server box that's been running 24/7 for the last 12 days. :) Other than the 2003 Server box, all the machines are running Win2k Pro... I have three machines on my desk. My primary XP development machine is a laptop, so that gets powered down and taken home with me every night. My other two machines - a Red Hat Enterprise 4 server and a PowerPC-based Mac Mini are left on all the time. I will sometimes use VNC to connect to both of these machines from home. I leave my machines running all the time and turn off the monitors when leaving for an extended time period. I'm running Win2K at work and WinXP Home at home. I'd guess I restart both systems about every 2-3 weeks on average. Usually I reboot because I'm loading up new software, or I just think it's about time. Every once in a while some software gets hung up, so I'll reboot. BW

Server 2003 - leave on anything else - reboot. Having said that, this machine has been on for days (XP) and seems to be OK. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My home IS my work, as of this week. I'm now working for Code Project :-) So, that's why the PC has been on all week, it's a notebook and it used to travel between work and home, now it's just in my office. It's playing up anyhow ( when I get online, the taskbar locks for about 15 min ), but everything else is unaffected. And it's been busy, I wrote code from 5 am to 10 pm the other day !! I use Excel and Access. Run a lot of VBA and SQL queries. MS bloat is a problem. Without regular reboots the bloat rules. Any suggestions as I would prefer to leave my boxes on. Past work in high tech areas taught me to always leave electronic gear on where possible. Beauty is in the hold of the beguiler.

During the week at home (Win 2k), I turn my computers off when not in use. Weekends I suspend them when not in use. My Win 2k Server runs all the time, the only time it needs rebooting is for maintenance (patches or software install that causes a reboot the occasional hardware replacement). I used to run a separate server just for Suse Linux, but it was only doing my DNSing, and the cost just wasn’t worth it. Windows 2000 server does just fine as a DNS server. At work it’s a different story if I don’t reboot every day then bloated Notes wont work (further commented with held to comply with the kid sister rule).
