The Kid Sister Rule[^] Personally, I prefer a "fuzzy" rule, and someone with the power to make a decision by himself. After all, life or happiness doesn't depend on a lounge post (and if it's the latter, get help). "Clear rules" kill human responsibility and understanding, and replace them by rule automatons. It seems easier, but you don't really want it, trust me :)

hmmm... regarding the Trigger finger[^] post by Martin Häsemeyer below. 1) I found the "Jack Schitt" story quite funny. Thats why I posted it. Others may or may not find it funny at all - thank god we have our own opinions. 2) Yes, I would certainly agree that a "thread moved" or "thread deleted" message would be very appropriate - if it came with an explanation. For several reasons - it would "educate" us and thus help us use the forum in an apparently more "proper" way but it would also keep the forum more "open" (less "policed" might be the rigth term ?)in some sense. Now - I would very much like an explanation from the person who moved my "Jack Schitt" joke. I've been a member for almost 4 years - and usually find that political and religious subjects are considered soapbox material, whereas innocent jokes, links to funny movies and the alike are considered lounge material. As long as it doesn't violate the "kid sister rule" - or is a programming question. I don't think the "Jack Schitt" joke is a political or religious hot subject - neither is it a programming question, so I must have violated the "kid sister rule". Why ? Because it contains the word "Schitt" ? The "S"-word ? This might just be me "being european", but kid sisters cannot possible be caused any harm seing that word. Or am I just way off - is there another reason for moving the post ? I would really like to know who moved my thread and especially why it was moved. Not that I'm mad or anything - I just don't understand it. Thanks. Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? Yeah. It's a light-hearted take on the multiple meanings and uses of a common vulgarity. FWIW, there are similar pieces on other such words - you may have heard or read a routine along the lines of "Seven words you can never say on television"? You can talk all you want about whether or not such attitudes are fair or sane, but can hardly deny their existence. And so, while for any given post in any given thread the use of such words might be forgiven, it is hardly surprising that a thread dedicated to the use of a vulgarity would be seen as unwelcome on what is arguably this site's flagship forum. Now, what's really funny about all this is that the relocation of the thread has sparked more discussion than the thread itself, as (IMHO) the advantage of simply moving a thread vs. replying with a harsh condemnation is the subtlety - the thread just disappears and re-appears in a more appropriate place. If this becomes a trend, the utility of such an action would quickly be brought to naught... :suss:

I don't have kids yet. The first one "arrives" sometime in june :) Anyway. Yes, we try to use a "sober language" in front of kids. We don't want them to swear all the time - because it doesn't "look good". One should be able to express both positive and negative feelings without resorting to "the f-, c- and s-word", and that is what we all try to teach our children. I talked to my wife about this since she was a year in Kansas as an exchange student. She has also visited her host family and other friends several times - so she isn't a complete stranger when it comes to "US culture". One of the things she learned first was that everybody just rewrote their senteces using e.g. "shoot" instead of "shit". So be it. But the point was that they used the "forbidden word" all the time, while just not directly saying it. No one is fooled, in my ears it's the same... :) It seems like in most european countries we just say the swear word when we say it. Not some funny rewrite. And that's when I don't understand the moderating politics at CP if a joke Mr. Jack Schitt is SO AWFULL that it has to be moved to the soapbox. But maybe the cultural differences are just too big. It is also only in US where the "beep" button is used in tv-shows. Sigh... Ah well. Regarding your house - you better keep your daughter away from other children unless you want to loose it very soon :-D BTW. what do you answer when se asks "dad, why do the tv beep all the time while that guy is talking ?" I think we watch about 20 hours of T.V. a year. I don't watch T.V. at all. I'd way rather be reading something and instead of reading I'd way rather be playing with my kids. So last night we all played outside in the mud (waiting for our grass seed to take) sprayed each other with the hose and generally got disgusting. Then a big storm blew in (in Idaho that's just nuts) so we went inside washed off and played hours of legos. My wife and I are very traditional parents. We are not keen on T.V. at all we both make a point that if we watch T.V. we'll record it and watch it later after the kids go to bed and rarely do we do that. I read to my kids for 30 minutes a night before bed instead of T.V. for family fun we might all cook something together (making a huge mess) go outdoors or whatever. So my kids never hear the "beep" from T.V. as our favorite show for them that gets watched/recorded is "Rollie Pollie Ollie" which is just about the best show I've seen for kids in a very long time. I watch it to. Good stuff but I'm simple minded and old fashioned. Anyway, swearing doesn't bother me but I grew up around it in my family there was tons of it. However, I try very hard not to do it but if I'm very stressed or tired it can come out but I'm not proud of it. I believe that if swear words are required to communicate something then you are going to miscommunicate it anyways because too many studies prove that you cannot communicate effectively if you are angry. Having said all of that I don't think my kids have heard much swearing but I *already* don't like the stuff they learn at school. Having said that though you cannot protect them from everything and if you try they'll grow up resenting you. So my wife and I just try to moderate what they learn as much as we can. - Rex

If they want to move your thread, delete it, ban you, well, yours is not to wonder why, now is it? If, on the other hand, you want to understand so that you know where to post something in the future, well, geez, get a clue. Do you honestly think a pun on the word shit, with all its variants, however funny, is compliant with the kid sister rule? If you do, well, then this is why people have rules without any need to explain them, because they're just wasting their breath. So, take a minute and think about it. In the beginning when I saw that root post, it was my 1st time reading that material and yes I felt it entertaining. Some words in the article were unfamiliar to me because I am not a native English speaker. I found a speaking version which made me better understanding found via Google, and I appended it under the root post. Then I found it being moved into Soapbox. I realized that it should be not proper to locate in the Lounge. And a little bit later, someones argued for it did not spell the exact dirty words but just in the onomatopoeia way, it should be alright. Then there came the opposite opinions. I removed it because I don't hope it becomes as what you (Shog) said: that's Flash for you (Jan R Hansen). It wasn't my intention to use the Flash to point at someone. I decided to delete it, and I did --- twice, because the host put it back again. After all, to me this is a place to discuss mainly the programming techniques and IT issues. I do not hope any argue or displeasing things to happen.

I think shog was encouraging you to leave it alone though because in the soapbox it's a safe place for it and many might enjoy it. I can tell you are not a native english speaker and I think if I were in your shoes I'd post freely and willingly but if you are uncertain of something you will receive no anger at all by asking. I've seen many occasions where someone makes a post and says, "I'm not sure if this is appropriate for the lounge or the soapbox what do you guys think?" everyone here is polite and they will tell you. Pay close attention to replies from those guys with hammers for their profile icon as they have a lot of experience here. This community is largely self policing though and I think I'm even beginning to understand that it's great how things work (I have a very hard head so I learn slowly at times.) and that great people are very busy behind the scenes keeping it great. I have to applaud (show my appreciation) you though for being sensitive to the quality and evnironment here. I think that distinguishes you as an excellent person. Keep it up and you'll do well.

OK - I'll bite.. :-D I almost wrote it - but didn't - and now I see that I should have done it. I know I'm a guest on CP, and I'm glad to be "invited" - however, moving a thread for being might cause new questions instead of leading to better behaviour. I place the dishes on the wrong table, the moves them and says - dishes goes here... instead of just moving them. Strange analogy :) So, as I would like to "understand", I need to get a clue. Well, then give me a clue while moving the post. Please. Yes, I could deduct that I somehow violated the kid sister rule - but would it be OK to post a joke whith the word "shi*t" in it ? Or is it just wrong because the entire joke revolves around the word ? I honestly don't think that explaining why the thread was moved would be a waste of breath. It could simply be "do not use the s-word in the lounge, please". Thanks - now I know. On the other hand - you might want to take a look at this entire thing as an evidence of a cultural "gap". Including beeping out "dangerous" words on public TV while having some of the most liberal weapon regulations in the west. But I wont. That would belong in the soapbox. Perhaps. It seems pretty clear to me that culture is moving at a rapid pace, the result of which can be seen daily in tolerance/acceptance of what was, even a year ago, less tolerated, less accepted. If taken to its logical extreme, where will it end? At what point does extreme become too extreme, even for the extremists? And where is boundary between extreme and tolerable, in which tolerable moves rapidly toward defining the cultural center of perfectly acceptable? There are some that resist that process, right?

I disagree that you need to tell them. As guests, they should be on their best behavior. Aware of themselves, in other words, looking over the entire cultural landscape and acting as noble as possible. Idealism, eh? Walking on eggshells, you might argue. Not necessarily. It's easy to create a situation in which you can say something that people will not take offense at, the same way it's easy to create a situation where people will take offense. After all that, I guess I would conclude, people have forgotten how to behave like guests. I think we watch about 20 hours of T.V. a year. I don't watch T.V. at all. I'd way rather be reading something and instead of reading I'd way rather be playing with my kids. So last night we all played outside in the mud (waiting for our grass seed to take) sprayed each other with the hose and generally got disgusting. Then a big storm blew in (in Idaho that's just nuts) so we went inside washed off and played hours of legos. My wife and I are very traditional parents. We are not keen on T.V. at all we both make a point that if we watch T.V. we'll record it and watch it later after the kids go to bed and rarely do we do that. I read to my kids for 30 minutes a night before bed instead of T.V. for family fun we might all cook something together (making a huge mess) go outdoors or whatever. So my kids never hear the "beep" from T.V. as our favorite show for them that gets watched/recorded is "Rollie Pollie Ollie" which is just about the best show I've seen for kids in a very long time. I watch it to. Good stuff but I'm simple minded and old fashioned. Anyway, swearing doesn't bother me but I grew up around it in my family there was tons of it. However, I try very hard not to do it but if I'm very stressed or tired it can come out but I'm not proud of it. I believe that if swear words are required to communicate something then you are going to miscommunicate it anyways because too many studies prove that you cannot communicate effectively if you are angry. Having said all of that I don't think my kids have heard much swearing but I *already* don't like the stuff they learn at school. Having said that though you cannot protect them from everything and if you try they'll grow up resenting you. So my wife and I just try to moderate what they learn as much as we can. - Rex

I don't have kids yet. The first one "arrives" sometime in june :) Anyway. Yes, we try to use a "sober language" in front of kids. We don't want them to swear all the time - because it doesn't "look good". One should be able to express both positive and negative feelings without resorting to "the f-, c- and s-word", and that is what we all try to teach our children. I talked to my wife about this since she was a year in Kansas as an exchange student. She has also visited her host family and other friends several times - so she isn't a complete stranger when it comes to "US culture". One of the things she learned first was that everybody just rewrote their senteces using e.g. "shoot" instead of "shit". So be it. But the point was that they used the "forbidden word" all the time, while just not directly saying it. No one is fooled, in my ears it's the same... :) It seems like in most european countries we just say the swear word when we say it. Not some funny rewrite. And that's when I don't understand the moderating politics at CP if a joke Mr. Jack Schitt is SO AWFULL that it has to be moved to the soapbox. But maybe the cultural differences are just too big. It is also only in US where the "beep" button is used in tv-shows. Sigh... Ah well. Regarding your house - you better keep your daughter away from other children unless you want to loose it very soon :-D BTW. what do you answer when se asks "dad, why do the tv beep all the time while that guy is talking ?" Do you know why it's important to make fast decisions? Because you give yourself more time to correct your mistakes, when you find out that you made the wrong one.
