It's poll time! :) After talking to another developer about Windows Vista, I've recently discovered that it isn't clear what the official pronunciation of "Vista" is. If you say "Vee-Stu" as in "hasta la vista", then please vote me a 5. If you say "Vi-Stu", then please vote me a 1. Since I can't vote on my own post, I'll give you my opinion right here. I say "Vee-Stu". It's a Spanish word afterall.

neither, I have been pronouncing it as Vis-Ta as in a distant view. Which fits in with the marketing I have seen. Jim

it's an Italian word, too. and all the dictionaries i checked say we got it from Italian, not from Spanish. either way, "vista" is accepted as an English word now, too. and as an English word, it's pronounced viss-ta. and since MS is an American company, it would be muy extraño to pronounce it any way but the English way. but, i could be wrong - if only to satisfy the law of averages. It's not Spanish. And if it were, it would be pronounced "Vis-tah". It's Latin, anyway. After the lesson (:-D), I always pronounced "Vis-tah". EDIT: I mean, it's Italian and Spanish too, but it derives from Latin. ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. My Blog [ITA] The ScrewTurn Software experiment

I'm assuming you pronounce the 'a' in "tah" like it is in "woman", rather than the 'a' in "apple". This was the pronunciation I was trying to convey by "Vi-Stu".

Ahhh, but I being from California (San Jose to be specific) which has many Spanish influences, "Vee-Stuh" seems more natural to me. From the local people I've asked so far, the answers have been mixed. My point here is that the pronunciation isn't as clear as you think.

You being Italian, Dario, your opinion holds a lot of weight here. Thanks for your input. By the way, what does Vista mean in Italian? I already know what it means in English. In Spanish, it's a conjugation of Vistar, meaning "to see".

Vista, in Italian it's the feminine past participle of vedere (to see). For example: "I have seen her" -> "L'ho vista" (it could be also "Ho visto lei", but it's not used). Anyway, this is not the way Vista is used. In Italian, Vista means also landscape or panorama or a beautiful point of view over, say, a valley. Exaclty as it is shown here[^]. Now you should understand the statement "Bringing clarity to your world". :) ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us. I have to give you 5 just for saying "freaks" and "CA" in the same sentence. :-D

I pronounce it this way - "shit", and I think that's derived from my anal pore. ------- sig starts "Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

Maybe you're not serious, but I think you are (anyway you can tell us). Why are you always so fucking bastard with other CPians? Age doesn't give you that right. A few time ago I also took a look at your profile. I decided to vote you down deliberately, at every post you write, even without reading it. ___________________________________ Tozzi is right: Gaia is getting rid of us.
