cant we survive without english

My dear planetmates, its high time for all the nations to sit together to invent a language which is acceptable by everyone as global language Really, life is getting miserable without english. In india its becoming like u need better english than technical skills if u want to suceed as a s/w engineer.I know many people who excel in the field more with their command on english.I dont know about other parts of the world... Today I told my boss regarding my colleague that "I will inform this to him". and he burst out to laughing...coz he was a she(umm..I mean my colleague was a lady) Now a days regularly I am dreaming about coding in my mother tounge.. :((:((
I guess it depends on what you are doing. since india has lots of outsourcing jobs (and i guess sub consultants to the outsourcing firms to?) there must be a need for good english.. if you work more with domestic customers i gues its more OK with bad english since you wont be killed if you use eg swedish in your code. (ok it might seem bad , but since all customers will describe their problemdomain in their own language there is not much need to translate their business specific terms to anything else) ok maybe this didnt make any sense at all :P

In Software Development, English is imperative. If I was responsible for hiring software developers I wouldn't hire anyone if he/she didn't speak fluently english. Why? Because communication is very important and because 90% of the internet is english. Even in the same language it's sometimes difficult to communicate. (See some posts here on CP eg.) It just grew that way I guess, but developing applications in multiple languages is just X| . I do think it's very low of your boss to laugh at a mistake. Mistakes make us human. :-D Coulda, woulda, shoulda doesn't matter if you don't. :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig: :jig:

Why has it not occurred to anyone in the U.S. that outsourcing all our technology (hardware and/or software) to other countries (e.g., India, China) is a National Security Problem; a very serious one at that (Hey! Let's give away the keys to the kingdom. Because that's smart!) Marc, I seriously hope you are mistaken; if "everything" is outsourced to China, then your comment:

Not just in India, it's the same everywhere.

Referring to a woman as "he" seems to be a little odd - what's that got to do with the complexity of the language? I bet you are glad she didn't hear you say that :-)

My native tongue is Malayalam, and while I think it's a cool language, I wouldn't remotely want to write code in it. Regards, Nish

That's actually a really interesting issue. The gov't has historically been strict (but also stupid) about determining what's a national security interest and what isn't, and hence restricts who works on things, what clearances they have, where they do the work, etc. But let's look at the private sector. I asked my girlfriend's brother who works for a major credit card company, how do you protect your outsourced software? The answer was very interesting--the Indian programmers work on systems that are very very locked down. First of all, they don't store any of the work on their own systems--they basically are controlling a remote system. Second, the file system is completely crippled--you can't read or write anything locally. Third, even doing screenshots or copy-paste to a local app is impossible. So that basically leaves taking pictures of the code with a camera. And to deal with that, the centers that these programmers work in are supposedly highly secured. Now, the funny thing, you and I both know that the reality is probably a bit "different", but who knows, maybe not.

It's inevitable. Half the world's population, sooner or later, will not only influence but essentially put the final seal on a global economy, both as consumers and producers.
