I drive 6.5 km to work, which takes ~20 minutes. The way back is 9 km long (2 one-way stretches :sigh: ) and takes anywhere between 25 and 45 minutes, depending on when I leave. I have 2 question here! 1st I'm curious, what's the average commute time around here? I will soon move to a place which would be in a place 1h30 from work. Is it THAT far? 2nd: I will also get the opportunity to work from home 4 days a week (and 1 day in the office). I wonder what fate awaits such arrangement. I mean I fought hard for it (I was about to leave!) and needs it (Car pollution is making me suffer real bad)(and I plan to learn some new trade I could practice in the country side, just in case). But, I wonder if some other people do work like that? Do they find the reduced communication is a real problem? Anyway needless to say I will keep trying hard to please my boss, with such invaluable arrangement! :-D I just hope I will succeed...
i recently started the same sort of arrangement - 4 days from home, 1 day in the office. i live about 30mins from the office (45mins during peak hour). i get more work done (no travel time), i work harder and longer, and i'm more productive (except when one of my kids is home sick!). Probably the best thing i ever did (work related anyways). Now i get more time with my wife, even if i do work most of it, and our relationship has improved exponentially;)!!! hope it works out as well for you. nicko

Good to know I'm not the only one and that it worked out well for some other people. Where do you live may I ask? I'm in Australia but a friend of mine keep telling me I should move to California (USA) where such arrangement are (supposedly, according to him) common place.

My trip to work is 35mins in the morning and 45mins in the evening. It would probably take more like an hour in peak hour, but I travel well before peak hour starts.

I've been working from home for about 5 years now. I love it, and I can safely say I have the best work environment than anyone I know locally :D The office is about an 8 hour commute by passanger jet, so it works out really well, as that travel time was really cutting into my family time ;P The heardest things I find is self motivation, discipline, and the lack of social interaction. If you rely on social interaction to get you motivated you will find it difficult working from home, but you get used to it after a while. Good communication just takes a bit of practice, it is a skill just like any other I can't recommend it enough though, it is simply the best way to work (for me anyway) - Phil

Short version : Unbelievablely blessed timing more than anything. Long version : The company I work for (www.surpac.com[^]) is based in Perth, and we have offices around the world, but one of the R&D bosses lives right here in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. I was about half way through uni, and dating my future wife (now my wife-wife :D), and I was running out of money, so we just hunted around the job ads looking for work, praying _alot_ for work. Not surprisingly, there weren't many software or math jobs around CQ, so we were settling for something less. But one day there was this small ad for a programmer for "Surpac Software International". "Oh yeah I thought, sounds like a one man guy working out of his house, " I thought. But I rock up to the interview, and it actually _is_ an international company. They advertised locally because noone in Perth suited the job. So after that long diatribe, I found myself working at my boss's house for a year, then got married, and worked from home ever since. God is good! I even got to buy wifey a nice engagement ring on my first pay day. - Phil

Yes. It takes me probably 20min to get to work. Would be less, but i have to drive across town, so lots of stopping.

No. Easier to ignore people when i need to get work done. There's still two phones, IM, email, etc. The one downside is that it's harder to find a distraction when i get stuck and need to redirect my thoughts for a while... CP is an acceptable substitute though. Or just bother random folk who've been careless enough to leave their status visible on IM. :)

Until recently I was commuting in and out of London which was a 2 hour thing each way. Add my nine hour day to that and the need for sleep and you find yourself with about one hour a day to call your own. This will break anyone if done long enough. I moved into London about a month ago, bought myself a Brompton (a really rather cool folding bike you can take into the office or your flat with you) and my 2 hours has changed to 18 minutes. Brilliant. As you say though, you get 4 days from home. I sometimes work from home, and communication can be tricky. Shype and Messenger seems the way forward with the phone if things get tricky. Its a nice way to work, but personally I need the discipline of the office around me to make me work. There are far too many distractions at home... Regards, Rob Philpott.

I live 70kms (just over 43 miles) from work. Luckily I arranged flexi-time so I can miss the traffic. It usually takes me from 45 minutes to an hour to get to work. If I were to try that during rush hour it would be more like ont and a half to two hours to get to work. Occationally I have the chance to work from home. I think this will have to start becoming the norm here in South Africa as traffic volumes increase and with no viable public transport in sight. I think the average commute time here in SA is about an hour. With all the messenger programs, VoIP and such-like communication has never been a problem. Also, I'm much MUCH less stressed that I was at my previous job. It was a very strict 8:00 to 5:00 job. X|

5km each way, 10 minutes. The most I have done is 30 minutes, the least 5. Well, when I say 5 minutes I spent more time walking from the car to the desk - it was a large site :) The tigress is here :-D

If I go by car it is a 40 minute commute. If I cycle into work it takes 25 minutes. I wouldn't put up with a 1h30m commute. regards, Paul Watson Ireland Feed Henry!

Do they find the reduced communication is a real problem?You do have to work extra hard at communication, but it should be fine if you are in the same timezone. Those timezone differences can really mess things up sometimes!

1h30m is very far. Maybe, not so bad, if you have travel by train or bus and can read books or newspaper, or maybe, use a computer to catchup on some work. If you are driving, and you absolutely need the job, then consider moving to a house closer to work. But, if you need to drive only for 1 day a week, it is not bad at all. Working 4 days from home would be great. I did work from home. The success depends on the cooperation of your colleagues. You can expect to get and make a lot of phone calls. At times, the reduced communication was a bonus because the number of silly questions coming your way is reduced, and you can concentrate on your work. But, when you need help, you lose the opportunity to just walk up to the other guy and talk informally. Wish you all the best.
