Commute time & Work from home...
-
I telecommuted for almost 10 years, and I found myself orking more hours. Productivity didn't suffer, and I never had to take time off ork for "life maintenance". IMHO, there is absolutely no reason every programmer here (well, at least the American programmers) couldn't telecommute at least part of the week. ------- sig starts "Why don't you tie a kerosene-soaked rag around your ankles so the ants won't climb up and eat your candy ass..." - Dale Earnhardt "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001

I'm more easily distracted at my apartament, might change when I buy a house and can setup an office, but I generally need the full hourish I save in travel/lunch times to get 8 honest hours in.

I have 2 question here! 1st I'm curious, what's the average commute time around here? I will soon move to a place which would be in a place 1h30 from work. Is it THAT far? 2nd: I will also get the opportunity to work from home 4 days a week (and 1 day in the office). I wonder what fate awaits such arrangement. I mean I fought hard for it (I was about to leave!) and needs it (Car pollution is making me suffer real bad)(and I plan to learn some new trade I could practice in the country side, just in case). But, I wonder if some other people do work like that? Do they find the reduced communication is a real problem? Anyway needless to say I will keep trying hard to please my boss, with such invaluable arrangement! :-D I just hope I will succeed...

All distance and time is relative to the individual. Is it far to you? I drive an hour to work assuming I don't get caught in a roadblock.

Then your commute is 0 minutes 4 days and 90minutes each way on one. piece of cake. I put 500+ miles a week on my car (each direction is 52 miles). _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I have a 7 - 10 minute drive, depending on if I hit the red lights. I'm spoiled now and anything over a 20 minute drive seems excessive. No work from home where I work, that would be helpful and convient for the workers...The problem is a manager can't micromanage you at home. Joe

10mi/20m here. 90m seems painful, but if you'll genuinely only have to do it once a week shouldn't be too bad.
Yep, it's genuine :D

i'm in Brisbane, Australia i don't know many others who's employer is receptive to the idea of un-supervised work at home, although i'm kinda alone in the office anyways (i'm the only programmer in a 200+ strong company). nicko
I am in Madrid, working for a UK Company and I am from Australia.... So I am sort of living the dream life.... I might be in the office once every 2 months.... So I am in the extreme situation... So 4 days home and 1 day office sounds perfect to me... Enough time home, but still getting away from home enough to have a bit of space and variety.... Sounds good, I would take it.... M :-D

20 minute walk from home to work :) I find it refreshing after sitting the whole day. I would love working at home, though I would have to work on my self-discipline... But it would be usefull to be able to take a break when ever I'm tired or just feel like it, and do the job on my own time. I believe it would be more productive. But I don't think it would be possible, since I have to test most of the code on hardware :^)

I need about 15min oneway from door to door with car. It's about 15 kilometers (10 miles). Working from home has been tested by our company. It has advantages but you have to have good discipline to work and not to mix with private matters. The mix would slow down your work. Communication is a big problem if you have to work with a team. Even if you have video conferencing, email, phone etc. still the direct talk eye in eye is the most effective. I think you have to get used to it and always keep an eye on improving information exchange. If everybody in the team participates it can work really fine. Cheers from switzerland Daniel :-)

Great email! My main concern is, indeed, team communication. But you seems to imply it might worked out acceptably well.... Cool

Hi Super Lloyd, In deed, if you handle communication carefully and maybe meet once more than needed, I'm sure it works. Of course it also depends on the other team members. If they can get used to this 'communication change' that would be best. Anyway, it takes time. Cheers Daniel :-)

I also work from home and can't imagine it any other way as a programmer. I have been working from home for almost a year now and love every minute of it, I am more productive, tend to work more hours without consuming much more of my day (commuting time spend working and typically shorter or no lunches), and have the ability to go back to a problem piece of code with new ideas at any time (huge convenience)! As for being alone, I think alot of that depends on what motivates you. Personally, I work for a small company with only myself and the owner as developers. We work closely together via phone and remote access software. I find it actually works out better than having somebody sitting at your desk with you if you are doing a code review or demo. Because we are so small though, it is very clear to the rest of the staff if I am not meeting and/or exceeding all expectations of me. I set my own expectations even higher as I strive for the impossible perfection. You can get a little cabin-fever sometimes, but a walk at lunch or running errands are great remedies. Good Luck!
