Alienware is fine as long as it's a model with a mobile CPU (the desktop CPU models have all those fans, and I'm trying to go as quiet as I can). That Aurora looks mighty yummy ;)

Those new Area51m machines have mobile CPUs. :) And yeah...I'm drooling over that Aurora. Dual SLI cards! :omg: Oh yeah...you're using the CPhog beta, right? Try hitting Ctrl+the arrow keys while you're navigating the forums. ;)

Unfortunately the Ctrl+arrows feature messes up the post editor - you can't use that shortcut in the text box anymore to move from word to word. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | PimpFish | CP SearchBar v3.0 | C++ Forum FAQ

You're not using the Midas Editor, are you? ;) Interesting. I'll mention that to Josh.

I think Dave has a StoneHog thingie for CpHog - sorta like an add-on I think. That's what gives him the ability to show various font sizes and colors! Regards, Nish

Hopefully this thread will stay on the front page for a while over the weekend. ;) I need some suggestions from the CP readership for a new laptop. It will be used for running XP and Vista and doing VC development. My budget is $3000. There are three must-have requirements: Video must be good enough for Vista glass to work. Gaming perf is not important since I don't play PC games anymore. Machine must be quiet (Alienwares that use desktop CPUs are out due to their fan noise) Must have a DVI out (I'll be using this machine as a desktop replacement and connected to my LCD monitor). [edit]Requirement 4: Not a Mac ;)[/edit] Aside from that, I'm pretty much open. Dual core/HT CPU is preferable but not a requirement. A 64-bit CPU is not necessary. --Mike-- Visual C++ MVP  LINKS~! Ericahist | PimpFish | CP SearchBar v3.0 | C++ Forum FAQ

find one of the new core duo's, they were released last month in limited release, but can be had online. It's a Centrino dual core with some desktop features without the heat. The desktop version of the same processor will be the core 2 duo released in June, but the laptop will be healthy. I know Toshiba is out because one of the guys from another department ordered one, his magic number is $2500 given government discounts, that is your $3000 price. I would have to contact him on Monday and see who he bought it from, I know Dell has them too. Dell has the duo's but aren't advertising them as much because word-of-mouth is keeping the product flow going, any more and they will be overloaded with purchases. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. So I guess this new Alienware laptop[^] is out? ;) The slimmer Area51m's are nice, I hear. The 5500[^] is the 15" offering and the 5700[^] is the 17". Both of them have mobile processors and I know they have DVI out. My Dad is really happy with his new Dell Inspiron 6400[^]. The only reason I would caution against that is the Intel integrated graphics card. X| And if you really want Vista glass, you're probably going to have to get a higher-end "gaming" laptop because they're the ones that don't have the integrated graphics cards. Those slim Alienware's have good solid 256MB NVidia GeForce Go 6800 cards in 'em. Good stuff. I've got a 6800 Ultra in mine and it works beautifully.

No. It's integrated into the beta version of the script. Josh put it in a few months ago and we've been ironing out features and bugs as we approach a v1.0 release.

Yeah. The downside of it is, IMO, the lack of RAIDed hard drives. It's only got a single 100 GB 7,200 RPM (or 120 GB 5,400 RPM X|) hard drive.

Sorry 'bout that - should be fixed now.

find one of the new core duo's, they were released last month in limited release, but can be had online. Can the video on those Toshibas and Dells handle Vista glass?

I expect so, they "should" have the same options of the existing Centrino's. Just drop the Intel Graphics and go with the add-on graphics card either ATI or nVidia and you should be able to go almost as high as the desktop chip does. yup: just peeked: at Dell[^] the graphics options go up as high as 7900 512Mb, so you pretty much choose as much as you want to pay. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau.

I've had IBM T42 p -- w/ mobile processor for the past couple of years .. I've been really happy with it. I'm running VS 2003, 2005, SQL server 2000, IIS, TomCat, MySql, media player, few IE windows all with 1 GB RAM running on Win2k3 OS. No problems so far, and the fan is also very quite. You can get this HW config for less than 1500 these days. - Malhar
