New job
-
Oh... 1 hour each way. That's not so bad. I used to sit in traffic for one and a half to two hour each way. That was to a job only 40kms away. Since then I got a new job that's 70kms away but I work better hours so I miss the traffic. It only takes me about 45 minutes each way now. You can get use to one hour each way. Is the pay more and the work better?
"Love is a snowmobile racing across the tundra and then suddenly it flips over, pinning you underneath. At night, the ice weasels come." I refuse to spend my life worrying about what I eat. There is no pleasure worth foregoing just for an extra three years in a geriatric ward.
My job is about 3000km away, but my commute takes me about one minute. I just wake up and walk from my bedroom to my home office and connect to the internet. Why aren't you guys telecommuting? Driving hours a day is crazy for someone who is a developer. We just need internet, IM and skype.

Hi, I've been offered a new job opportunity today, but it would make me drive at least 2 hours a day, since it is about 100 km far from where I live, and moving closer is not an option. The job is very tempting, but I am not sure about spending so much time in a car. I already drive about 1h30 a day, but 30 minutes more seem to me like ages. What would you guys do ? Do you think I will get used to it ? ~RaGE();
we just interviewed someone who's main reason for looking for another job was the long commute to his current job (which looked like a very nice one) Steve

Yes, otherwise I would not even have considered changing. ~RaGE();
What do you want out of life? Can the extra money minus the extra time purchase you what you want out of life? If the money purchases what makes you happy, will you have the time to spend enjoying what you purchased? Will the job fulfill you and make your life worth living to you? Or would you be happier to spend the time with friends and family and/or hobby? Most of us find out that when we get something we really think will make us happy, that we are happy only for a short time. Then we think something else will make us happy and go for that. In the end, when the options are short, we find that we really didn't get anywhere toward our happiness with all our purchases and worries about purchasing and protecting what we purchased. Weigh the value of your decisions towards its contribution to your lasting happiness. PS. I've commuted for between 1 and 3 hours for most of my career. It wasn't worth it. I'm no further ahead than I was 2 decades ago. I'd have been better off living in a trailer in the country, and living a less expensive life-style.

That depends on the job. I drive one hour each direction, 2 hours a day, every day. In my case I kept the job and moved. I used to live 40 minutes from work, when I ... had to find a place of my own again, I chose a location farther away for safety and comfort and still within range from work. In my line of work long commutes are normal. A rare few drive up to 90 minutes one way. But it all comes down to what you think of the job. The commute will become routine, is the work worth that, only you know for sure. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. He said that the job is 100 km away and two hours of travelling in a day, so that means he can cover 100 km in an hour :)
The statement below is true.

100km/hour is only 62.mph, with a speed limit of 65mph which is common, that is easy. With out of city speeds of 75mph here, that is a piece of cake with spare time for traffic. Since most of the traffic exceeds 75mph to 85-90mph (and the rare exceptions of >100mph) the time is less for those. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. Just make a test drive once, you'll know if its comfortable for you or not. If it's a little bit uncomfortable, no problem, you'd certainly get used to it. But if you find it really unconfortable, then day by day, you'll start feeling more and more of it. So decide with the help of your test drive. and also dont forget to think about similar opportunities around the place where you work now. If its possible to find a similar job nearby(may be after sometime), then just drop it.

That is a tough one to test. Generally the excitement of a new job will make the test invalid. The danger/dread or acceptance of the commute will come when it becomes routine, rarely before. If the work does not provide that excitement, definitely it is not worth the commute. But I would caution anyone to not let their guard down on a commute simply because they survived well a one day drive. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. If you count what they were offering for me to stay (and not what I was currently making), I took about a $25k USD per year pay cut to change jobs to one where I only traveled about 6minutes each way instead of an easy hour+ each way. I'm still in college, so maybe time was a bigger necessity for me than for you, but I would say you should ask yourself how much extra time in your day is worth over time spent driving. Any chance you can change where you live to be closer to your new job? That would seem the best solution to me. It wasn't a realistic option for me at the job I left (no way in hell I would live around where I worked). Good luck man, I know its probably not an easy decision. Sometimes, when I look at my paycheck, I still wonder a little bit if I made the right call. Then I drive home, down 3 streets and thru about 5 traffic lights, without even going by a freeway, and I feel better.

True, this is without traffic at all, by sunny wheather. No chance if I get stuck in the traffic because of icy roads in the winter. It is mostly highway, in Germany, where you can drive 120km/h without any problem (there is no speed limit, you may drive 200km/h if you want), which makes it possible to drive 100km in one hour. ~RaGE();
The issues are surely different to those discussed Will you be a whole heap more passionate about the new job? Is it doing things you are passionate about? If it is a promtion which means you have to lead/manage people which perhaps you don't do now, do you think you have the skills to do it and will you like it? Does the new organisation have the right values, mission, goals etc (or is it the same organisation in a different city)? Do you feel that your new boss will lead you / manage you in the way you like to be led? ASk yourself similar questions about your current job. Remember the grass often appears greener on the other side of the fence till you get there? Have you spoken to other people who work at the new organisation? Can you track some down via your network of contacts? Good luck! Stephen

No you won't get used to it. You'll be out for work for 12 hours a day minimum. You won't get to do fun technical stuff in the evenings just because you are interested in it. So, you'll get out of date with technology, lose interest in your work and hate your job. You will arrive late once in a while because a journey that long will go wrong at least once a week. Your boss will think you are a slacker because he only remembers the times you come in late and that you try to get away on time each day, so you won't get promotion or get given the important work that needs someone really committed. Then you will spend your spare time trying to find a new job closer to home or a new home closer to your job, but you won't have time to do that either so you will be stuck in a job that's grinding you down with no way out except to stop doing the job. You'll lose contact with your family and friends, stop doing all your interests and have nothing to talk about except work. Finally, you will end up unloved and alone with a job you hate and go to an early grave because all you do is eat fast food, sleep and work. The only reason to take a job with that sort of commute is if you are seriously intending on moving closer to it.

Well, I have different experience :) My first learned German word was 'stau' :laugh: No problem to catch congestion around Munich, columns of tens of kilometers are normal as sun rising in the morning. A9 is permanently stuck. Car accident makes instant collapse of A9 and most of connected highways. 120 is just a dream, forget it :) IMO here are your option: 1) Move 2) Forget about the job 3) Try to figure out that you will work at home and will commute like for 2 days in week only.

Obviously this is a personal choice. For me the answer is "no way"... I was commuting in heavy traffic 45 minutes in the morning and 60 to 90 minutes on the way home. It was taking too much out of my life, so I recently took a different job where I only have to commute about 20 - 30 minutes each way. Yes, I am making a little less money, but now I get to see my family. As a bonus, the new job has flexible hours, so I'm home by 16:30. You need to evaluate in terms of your current lifestyle and what you want to do outside of work. When the first digit of my age was a "2", I would have said go for it, but now it's not worth it.. I once had a commute from northern Connecticut to Midtown Manhattan. It ruined my life. I don't know about you, but I agree with one of the other replies, work to live. No job is worth losing what's important to you. I know. Remember no job is worth losing what's important, no job, no amount of money, no prestige, nothing is worth that.
