Hi All, I am very disturbed on the reservation policy of indian government. They have made all arrangements to ruin the future of bright indians. Time by time they keep on doing such thing. They just do all for their vote bank. First it was V.P. Singh and now this bloody Arjun Singh. I am writting here to get all of your support on this. Please tell me what are the ways to protest governement against this reservation issue. The Reservation Ghost is Back[^] Face the Music - Mandal-II[^] Regards Nitin P.S: Celebrities where are you. Nish, You should check if from one IP address, only one perticular ID is working. Also I think there should be validation mail to the inbox of the member telling him to validate the membership or people may fake email address and may some innocent person get lot of junk mail (for him) from CP about the postings. pathak

Actually it's a brute-force (and imho simplistic) method of ensuring that a certain percentage of new admissions to universities are from lesser privileged economic classes. The brute-force approach guarantees admission regardless of the applicants' academic performance, but also prevents other students (with possibly much higher scores) from attending the academic institution. :( /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

Your probably have heard of the caste system that exists in India. After independence, the Indian government brought in a system of reservation so certain percentage of college admissions and government job vacancies are reserved for people from lower castes [including the tribals]. The aim is the upbringing of the socially and economically backward castes. This is a logically correct move, IMO, since it would be tough for people in economically and socially backward communities to compete against the affluent section, when it comes to academics [and other areas obviously]. The system has been quite effective though it has still not produced the expected results - either due to the misuse of the system or due to the upper caste officials' efforts to hijack the system. A lot of the upper caste people are protesting against it saying that it's taking away their opportunities. While it is true to some extent, what they are ignoring is the fact that the lower caste people were suppressed for centuries. Very often the vacancies in the reservation category are left unfilled because there are not enough eligible candidates [not because there aren't enough lower caste people, in fact they are the majority, but because they are still downtrodden they can't even afford to get elementary education]. There are occasions where the system gets misused where it's the third or fourth generation of the same family which utilises the reservation system [which is not that fair if you come to think about it], and it is because of this minority that a lot of people think the reservation system is an evil. In reality it is not. India still has to go a long way to improve the social conditions of the lower castes. A better and effective implementation of the reservation system is what people should ask for, not a total ban of it. If I am right, forms of reservation exist in North America too. I have heard of financial support provided by the government for the economically backward people, in Canada - which actually is paid by the taxes that they collect from the affluent majority. It's the communist principle of transferring money from the have's to the have-not's. - Smitha Every problem has a gift for you in its hands. -- Richard Bach

It's an equivalent of affirmative action in the US.

Speak against reservation. -- modified at 9:32 Friday 19th May, 2006
