I've been working all day and most of night for the past few weeks on a project that's quite critical to the well-being of my business. The closer i get to the deadline the less ideas I get during the standard 8 to 5 work hours - this so frustrating - 30 minutes go by and nothing....60, and back on square 1. I recently adopted the habit of having a sun-downer and browsing through CP postings and enjoying it. I jump between CP and Borland and found that by the 2 or 3 hours spent reading posts, partial coding and relaxing, I've actually been more productive in the past 3 hours than in the 8 during the day... The other day i went out with friends and started off with a few brandy & cokes. Round about 10pm I started getting all sorts of ideas - I went home and re-structured a whole sub-system. Yesterday I reviewed my code and was amazed of what I was capable while under the influence of Alcohol. The coding was something else - a total different point of view. Exactly what was needed for the project. the code inspired me to re-design a few conceptual ideas and at the end of the day I guess I should thank the booze for the tip!

Ah yes. The ultimate programming technique. More powerful yet with fewer elbows to the the head than EXTREME programming. More customer friendly yet less liberating than Naked programming. Faster and safer than Object Oriented Programming in Assembly. It's Drunk-fu programming!!! Secretly practiced in bars and Starbucks for years, it's the pinnacle of programming. Just don't expect the comments to be meaningful as the code is liberally sprinkled with comments such as "Enterprisy", "Brillant", "You aren't expected to know what this does because I sure as **** don't", "You're not the boss of me" and "BEEEELCH". For true programming power, get Drunk-fu. Of course if you have to maintain it, the next guy will need to be trained in the art of straight-jacket programming which is coming soon.

I know exactly what you mean! I've found that the best ideas always comes when you not thinking about the project. And that forcing your mind to come up with some ideas during the time you are working is never the best plan. Pretty much why I have a notepad next to my bed! Ideas always seems to spring up very late in the day.

as you say; working hours for progammers must be 'officially' after hours.
