Simplicity in TV Commercials

Seeing one of these ads is funny. "Well... Calculator?" That's hilarious. Seeing more than one Apple makes itself look arrogant.

I hope this is not a repeat, but I recently saw some very funny TV commercials of Mac-PC comparison during Cavs & Piston game. The first computer I used (not owned) was a Mac. My first encounter caused so much frustration that I never used a Mac again. Anyways, I do not intend to start a religious war here but I was really impressed by their marketing strategy .. simplicity == less technical mumbo-jumbo == effective. The videos, however, do require you to have QuickTime or .MOV extension compatible player. I'll update the artcile once I find link on Google Videos or non .MOV files. http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/[^] - Malhar
I had in my hands one of the new Intel Macs yesterday. It was a toss up between getting it and getting Yet Another Boring Laptop. I was so, so keen to get the mac and then the dream started evaporating. No backspace key. No right button on the touch pad. No separate home/end/paging keys. Even opening the lid was fiddly and annoying. My feeling on Macs (including the OS) is they look sensational and are presented, packaged and marketed amazingly. But, unfortunately, it's more hype than substance. I was sad. [Edit: Just watched the iLife ad. Regardless of politics and affiliations I find it a cheap shot that Apple promotes its bundled software as an advantage over Windows. Maybe Apple wouldn't be so cocky if they too had a visit from the DOJ. Sorry - but I found that ad a little ridiculous.] cheers, Chris Maunder

I totally agree  On the other hand, I work in a Mac company (I write the "Windows version" of the software) and my boss has similar incomfort when using a windows computer. Go figure! Anyway, I'm using both, but I haven't noticed the lack of backspace key?! Perhaps because I'm using a Mac desktop, there are less key on the laptops... For home / end / paging key you could try an astute combination of arrow keys + either of (I always forget) APPLE KEY or SHIFT or ALT or .. I think there is a 4th special key.

There is a lot to be said for the 'simplicity' approach. One of the main reasons that computers didn't become household items a decade earlier was that the average user was intimidated into catatonia by the text interface and lack of intuitive features. Windows made the difference for the PC world. True, Apple did it first. My first out-of-the-box computer was an Apple IIc, and it was certainly easy to use. Unfortunately, it didn't do anything, and there was no such thing as commercial software at the time. If I wanted it to do anything useful, I had to write the program to do it. Programming it was easy, but at the same time, nearly impossible because of the limitations of the CPU and the product design. Simple short programs were quick to program and worked great, but anything more complex than a checkbook register program was a major effort and not worth the hassle. It's quite saddening to think of what Apple could have done, given their head start, if only a few design choices had been made differently. We might all be driving computers today that don't crash every few weeks, that look stylish on our desks, and network easily with anything in the neighborhood. "Restarting" and "Viruses" are mildly funny, the rest range from annoying to cringe-worthy.

Pardon a stupid question, but... If there's no backspace key on a Mac, how do you make corrections when you are entering text?

Here is another despicable issue: The 1 button mouse! I think since little time (last year?) they have introduce reasonable mouse... but arghh..... Anyway, and thankfully, the OS do support Microsoft mouse (2 button + scroll wheel)

Didn't some of these commercials on "stability and security" debut just before they found 30 flaws in Quicktime... nuff said. Matt Newman
