Yeah that's what I was thinking of. I just have to convince my wife that purchasing these things on ebay does not mean your buying stuff from some black market thug whose selling the packs from dead soldiers - she's convinced that this is the case. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Correct me if I'm wrong, but that Alice pack is Olive green. Right now, the last few wars I can think of had soldiers in the desert wearing brown, beige, black and white. The last war I can think of that had US soldiers in olive green was Vietnam and maybe Haiti. So unless that's a 40 year old backpack in which case you would think that there would be some bullet hole, mud, or a **** on toast stain on it somewhere, it is probably military surplus. Besides, if you take her to any Army/Navy store they can probably show you tons of those puppies. Although if you're going to buy that, I say buy a canteen and some fatigues. Nothing scares off a mugger like someone who appears to be dressed for war. ;)

I'm thinking of getting a backpack that can carry weight (up to about 40 lbs, or 18-19 Kg) to go hiking/walking for 3-4 hours. But I'm not sure what kind makes the best sense. The hiking will not be in some remote area (I will going in NYC's Central Park) - I will not be going overnight, or carrying food, other than maybe a light snack and water, I just want the weight to make the workout harder. I went into an EMS[^] store yesterday and the salesguy (who seemed genuinely knowledgeable) suggested something like this: Osprey "Stratos 32"[^] or ar least I think it was something like that. The backpack at EMS was around $134 USD which is more than I'd prefer to spend, but I will if it means that's what it takes to do this safely. The pack is an internal frame pack, which is what I gather you want to look for. I'd looked on ebay and you can get the really big bags (around 5000 cubic inches) for $40 or so, but I *really* don't need anything that bulky. Another idea is something like this: ALICE pack[^] Any other thoughts or recommendations? ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned Save an Orange - Use the VCF!

Now the boys are grown and out of the house I have a couple of external frame packs sitting around. I have not used them in a four years now if you want one I will just ship it to you if you don't mind used equipment. The only suggestion I can offer on packs is to make sure you get it fitted correctly if you have it to low or moving around on you back it makes the hike much longer.

I've just read through the comments and everyone seems to be under the impression you need an internal frame. I've found you don't if you pack it well enough, from completing the Gold Duke of Edinburgh (for those of you that don't know, it includes a 50 mile walk over four days in "Wild County", I did mine in the area of the Beacon's where the SAS train). If you were in Britain, Tesco have some great deals on at the moment, I just bought a day sack for when I supervise DoE expeditions which is 45L for £13 and it's a good quality one. The only advice I can give differing from the others is that the most important thing is the support, you need padded shoulder straps and a waist strap. Ideally most of the wait should go onto your waist but if that starts to ache (unlikely in a 3-4 hour walk) then you can slacken that and tighten the shoulder straps to shift the weight there.

You know you're a Land Rover owner when the best route from point A to point B is through the mud. Ed

There are weighted vests designed specifically for training. Here's one site that lists some varieties.http://www.weightvest.com/weightedvest3.html[^] I have no experience in using any of these and they aren't cheap, but it might be something else to consider. Also, have you thought about getting ankle weights? BW
