I'm a Diploma holder. in my company alot of fresh graduates joined last year(around 300). But still im feel comfortable in sitting with them because I know "Knowledge is Power".... this is not claiming that im a genious :) SaRath.

But don't let the paper hold you back. After you have enough of credential from work experience, the paper doesn't mean much any more. Like someone above said, you got to think like a sales person. You got to start think of the reasons why would a employer hire you, and work and gain experience in that direction. You got to let the employer what you are capable of, and you got to show them that you keep improving yourself and moving up the tech ladder, from starting as a programmer, then leading team members, acquaire the skills to negotiate with customers or requirement gathering, learn the domain knowledge (important), etc etc. You need to continuosly increase your own market value. I have been through the same thing, and I was not even in IT field before. You should start looking before it hit the fan, IMO.

Basically, I do development related to GIS (ESRI arcgis products) . I use MFC, COM, C++, C, VB, SQL kind of stuff. But in india , Gis companies are not many. So thinking of changing the domain to telecom or banking and plus continuing my studies anyhow to become graduate. HR guys do give excuses of qualification while negotiating on salary. Ram Kumar

I am "just a diploma holder" I do have a technical certificate from a vocational/technical college but it is really only recognized in oklahoma since standardization of votechs was not as common in the 80's. I am also a leader in realtime 3D graphics with a major 3D product. Ten years ago I was no one, I still pretty much am no one, my product is better known than I am. However, it shows that education is only half the picture. I have been doing 3D graphics since 1993, and self taught. But with 13 years of experience you simply put an emphasis on what you DO have which is experience. you have two choices: A) go back to school and increase your education to go along with your experience, which even I am considering B) put a strong emphasis on your experience AND have faith in your own abilities. Go into a job interview thinking your experience qualifies you, not that your lack of education disqualifies you. Hey, Don't worry! IMHO its experience that matters more than education. Companies look for experience rather than education, although Experience+Education is a big plus. I for one am a BSc graduate but I work in a company where everybody else are B.E.(Computers)-. EveBachelor of Engineeringn the VP and President are Engineers. But my salary is way better than most of the employees because I make up for my deficiency in education through hard work and experience. I am currently a Team Leader and leading of team of people much more better educated than me. So, you see, experience and what you can give to the company counts a lot more than education. Hello Ram Kumar One reason many companies do not take people without graduate degrees (that's under-grad degrees for N.America), is that, most of the work would be US-based, and if the company wants you to go abroad for an on-client-site assignment, processing a Visa for you would be difficult without a degree. Work Visas require a professional degree - US under-grad equivalent (which translates to what we call graduate degrees in India - such as a B.E. or a B.Tech.). Regards, Nish

I know some diploma holders who came here(in US) in H1B Visa. This happened during 1999-2000. I heard that the consulting company can say "diploma with some years experience is equivalent to degree with less number of years experience". I don't know whether this is true anymore with the new Visa rules. Some of the guys who came with diploma got Green Card also. I know companies like Satyam, Polaris are bringing non-engineering graduates(BSc/BCom) etc these days and they are all getting Visa in US. Regards, Madhu.

Hey Madhu, Yes, I guess Diploma holders and 3-year degree holders do make it here, but most companies would prefer someone with a 4-year engineering degree. But thanks for the info - I am sure the original poster would have got encouraged by that. :-) Regards, Nish
