Does anyone here have any idea what percentage of the world uses Windows and what percentage uses Linux systems? you can't forget something you never knew...

It depends whom you ask. If you ask a Windows user, they'll reply that 90% of the world uses Windows and 10% uses Linux. If you ask a Linux user, they'll reply that 10% use Windows and that 110% use Linux. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. Yup. Everyone uses Windows. Everyone else uses Linux. Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. Literally. At least [with Wikipedia] you have the chance to correct the wiki -- Jörgen Sigvardsson

How about this: Every one uses Linux, the rest Windows.

Interesting stats. I am not too sure about Linux and MAC making up such a small percentage. I personally use Windows about 80% of the time and Linux the other 20% (most of this is at the University). PJC

I think it depends on the type of application (desktop, server, mobile, embedded, etc). This[^] report (FWIW) may lead you closer to the answer. /ravi My new year's resolution: 2048 x 1536 Home | Music | Articles | Freeware | Trips ravib(at)ravib(dot)com

Yep, The professor who taught the graduate Super Visualization course that I took a couple years ago had his machine setup with Linux and kept Windows inside VMWare. Thought that was kind of odd. I have gone the other way, Windows with Virtual PC running Linux from Virtual PC. Paul

For what systems do this apply? Desktop PC's and Servers alike? The most recent count I could find was 2004 when Linux had a 3% global market share in desktop PC's. Could that 3% actually have climbed to 18%? you can't forget something you never knew...

WAG is Wild err... ASP Guess.... However it is impossible to know really, because it requires a few definitions and access to some information that cannot be publically accessed. More emergency boot disks are becoming Linux because they can be shared easily, Virtual Machines are running both simultaneously, and then you get into dark systems for the military. Some computer manufacturers like SGI/Sun/IBM have dropped their own OS for Linux variations. But the buyer isn't required to keep the operating system that is installed for them on purchase (either Windows or Linux), so it is a statistic that cannot seriously be known because it is changing dynamically. _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau.
