I may be wrong but.... I have found that guys who have been given primary education in english medium are better speaker in english than those who have been .. in their mother toungue. they have better command and more words, fluency, confidence. Here in india convent educated guys are very fluent . Other who just took their education in their own language are always lagging in communication even they are brilliant. They never get the confidence eventhey may be able to speak adequately. that thing remains in their mind that we are not upto it. So does that mean we can never match those convent educated guys? rkumar

Well, that would stand to reason

In English ? Possibly. I guess the big question is, how often does this matter ? I can say from experience that lots of Indians who cannot speak English have no trouble getting work in call centres, I can't see why they'd have trouble getting work in places where speaking English actually doesn't matter..... You could be a good communicator without being grammer perfect english speaker. Communication skills require lot more then just being fluent in english. And you could improve your english skills at any time, given the enough effort. you don't need to be convent educated for that. I did my schooling in gujarati medium and don't consider myself very knowlegable about the english language. But I think I can communicate good enough in english. Though i have to run spell checker every time I write something :) Just think of some native english speaker trying to learn and speak your mother tounge and that might give you some more confident. Ankita

The reason that people who were thought in english are better english speakers it that they practiced the speaking a lot. Anyone could learn to speak a language well, if they practice it regullalry. Hanging out in english speaking groups would benefit you most. The best way to learn a language is actually to speak it. I remember when I have spent 1 month in Italy. The first two weeks I understood what people were talking but I had difficulties trying to come up with sentences in italian to express myself. Well after taht two weeks I gradually evolved and at the end of the month I could talk to people in italian. Even though I have never studied Italian before. regards, Mircea Many people spend their life going to sleep when they’re not sleepy and waking up while they still are.

From my experience communication has nothing to do with language. Most of the guys that i have seen who can't communicate in English they can't communicate well in other languages as well, it all boils down to expressing yourself it takes practice if you are not good at it. I have been studying english since childhood but was never too good at speaking english then i started talking more in english, it was embarrassing at first (long pauses :D ) then i got better and the No.1 advice i got was try to talk slowly now i am alright i work mostly with english speaking people (mainly US). Now i am try my hand at their accent :)

So does that mean we can never match those convent educated guys? rkumar

In general, those who get a head start would be a little ahead of the others, but there would always be exceptions. Non-native speakers who read (and write) are usually better at language and grammar than those who don't. Watching English-language movies and TV might help, but reading would be better - and when I say read, I don't really mean Archie comics. Regards, Nish
