I am looking for a Norton-Ghost-like software, preferably free (if it isn't free and it's good, by all means, suggest it.) Any ideas?

There used to be DriveImage, but PowerQuest was bought out. I've heard of CloneDisk, but I've never used it. All-in-all, dd isn't that bad of a choice if you feel like booting from a live Unix/Linux CD to do the dirty work. Jeremy Falcon

Acronis Disk Director and Acronis True Image. Server licensing is steep as all get out but their desktop stuff is affordable and will pay for itself rather quickly.

I have to agree with code-frog about Acronis True Image. I consider it one of the best software products I have ever used. Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. Why are you dressed like that? - Jack Burton

dd is a Unix/Linux tool that copies raw data from files or disks or other block-type devices. I've used it to clone disks before, and it works pretty well, but is pretty basic. It wasn't really a serious recommendation ;)

Yup. That's what I use - works great and is fast. Cheers, Drew.

Yeah, I was looking at its site earlier. Is it really good? $49 is not a lot of money. Thanks!

Of the products out there I think it's the best. I've used it and Norton Ghost. Norton Ghost was terrible and flaky. Acronis has great USB storage support and should handle (with ease) any configuration you have. I've spent about $3000 with them so $49 doesn't make me pause for thought. I think it's a good buy. If you get it and don't like it let me know. I'll buy your copy from you. I can use it immediately. - Rex

Don't worry. From your words, I will not want to sell it :) I will take a look into it tomorrow morning. Now I am off to bed! Good night! :)

Try SystemRescueCD[^], it contains Partimage[^] which is meant to be quite a good freeware Ghost replacement. I have downloaded it and burnt it to CD, later tonight I will be trying it out by imaging a Ubuntu Linux box to an external USB FAT32 200GB drive. HDClone[^] The free edition copies disks but, IIRC, not single partitions.

By Norton no less I seem to remember.  Guess the inevitability: PQDI -> Ghost...
