My GF has a Crap-ware program called "Regestry Cleaner" that won't uninstall without a Credit Card number to do it. First, how do I keep it from running at startup? (remove it from somewhere in the regestry?) Second, can I delete it from disk then search the regestry for all traces? Third, how do I back up the regestry before I try anything? Fourth, who can I report this Crap-ware to? Thanks Qwez

Go to Start->Run. Type regedit.exe. Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion->Run. Check if the program is there. If not, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE with the same path.

You can waste a lot of time on this and since you sound like it's all new to you then you could easily burn 10 to 20 hours (or more) on it. If I were you I'd go to www.webroot.com[^] and buy SpySweeper it's the best $29 you will spend. I love it and use it on any box I have running Windows. If you really want to do the rest follow what weiye said but that's only one area. I'd seriously recommend you visit http://www.sysinternals.com[^] and start reading. There's a ton of free tools there to help you and you can start by typing "autoruns" in the search window and then after you download autoruns (which will show you all programs, dll's, etc that run at system startup) then you will want to download Process Explorer another must have. It will show you ... Guess What? Yeah, all running processes and a lot more. Experiment with viewing more than the default columns. Autoruns should get you what you need. As far as backup. Start Menu -> Programs ->Accessories->System Tools->Backup select registry in the Wizard and let it go. Having said that you can also right click on the key you are going to edit and export it as a .reg file before you make any changes. Then simply double-click the .reg file to restore the key to it's original state. - Rex

Grab Autoruns and RegMon from Sysinternals[^]. Autoruns will show you *all* of the places things can insert themselves to run on startup, and you can delete them from there. Running Regmon (filtered to that EXE) will show you where else the app might be reading/writing, so you can delete those entries as well. Worst case, grab FileMon as well -- that will show you if it's left any droppings elsewhere on the HDD. -------------- TTFN - Kent

Is that the name of the application?

You just let everyone that reads the lounge know. It’s a good start.

I'd love to help, but unfortunatley I have prior commitments monitoring the length of my grass. :Andrew Bleakley:

Spybot S&D has a registry cleaner when you run it in advanced mode. Just curious, where did you get the bad program, so we know were to stay away from.
