Tell me about it. Oh, when I say reinstall, I mean install over the top, not format/install. Thursday, I decided to upgrade (?!?) to XP from 2000 pro. Put in the CD, it nicely asked if I wanted to upgrade and keep my current settings, apps etc. "Ohhh, lovely install" I thought, I felt all warm and fuzzy about the install. This feeling did not last long. The install went away and did its stuff, I had a cup of tea. I got back to find a black screen saying that I no longer had a C: to boot from. Try as I might, the C: had gone and wasn't coming back. So a full format/install and 3 days later I'm running on XP and have got my main dev project back running on the machine. Lucky I have a separate drive for data... Moral of this story, dont trust anything. Not the OS, not an install and not your hardware. It will all go wrong, you cannot do anything about it and you may as well just get used to picking up the pieces. Make sure you backup your data before attempting the reinstall... Pete

Warning: long rant I'm running XP Pro at work, and I love it. Fast, stable, and almost works perfectly. :( Unfortunately the stupid search utility is, well... stupid. So through out the day, I go about my work, and I need to search through a bunch of text files, batch files, or what have it. I don't use the search utility in VC because the files don't always live in the source code tree. So this search starts off without a problem, searching directories and such, but it simply never ends. Once it is finishes searching the last directory, it starts all over, and continues to hog my CPU. If I hit cancel, it wipes out the list of files it found so far, then it starts searching again with out any interaction from me. I could hit cancel for an hour staight, and it would start searching again on its on. It simply refuses to stop searching. It really irks me. Win2k didnt have this problem!

I know exactly what you mean. The XP search is crap!. It will find files for me with the matching file name's, but when I ask it to do the same thing with 'A word or phrase in the file' it fails to find anything at all!!! MS, if your listening, sort it out! Dylan Kenneally London,UK

 I think this is incredible. Doesn't work, simply reinstall... Nothing personal Pete, but I'm just wondering why everyone puts up with this? I don't like reinstalling windows every 2 weeks.

It's the price you have to pay for the shear joy and privilidge of using Windows. Sorry to dissapoint you all with my lack of a witty or poignant signature.

Just point the search to wherever you are searching, and search *.* instead of just cpp files or whatever. It has always worked for me... But I agree, the XP search has taken a step backward from 2000's search... especially the user interface. Personally I avoid upgrades like the plague--I always do clean installs. If one isn't willing to take the time to do that, one should stick to the OS he/she is currently using. My 2 cents anyway...

I fell your pain. A few years ago I found the perfect tool for manipulating files, search etc... take a look at Windows Commander Hit Alt+F7 to search in files. .Henrik
