Amazingly so, actually. I've seen people put together useful "apps" with Excel. It's actually scary what you can do.

The worst thing you will hear when developing a non-excel version of something prototyped in Excel is a manager saying "but it doesn't work the same as it does in Excel." :sigh: Marc Pensieve Some people believe what the bible says. Eh. You think you got a bad start. I spent all day trying to work out why a sonar system wasn't working. It was working last time I touched it. Now it just doesn't respond to any commands  This system is meant to be demo'd in NZ next week. Nothing like a tight schedule :sigh:

Many of the worlds more fluid and exciting financial systems (hedge funds, credit default swaps etc.) are run in excel sheets in production The best tip would be to give your worksheets and cells meaningful names - to do this select the cell in question and overtype the cell reference in with your alias. That way yo end up with equations that look like: GrossMargin = SaleValue - CostOfItem * (1 / VatRate) instead of G13 = G8 - G7 * (1 / Sheet1!A2) '--8<------------------------ Ex Datis: Duncan Jones Merrion Computing Ltd

As long as you don't need blazing performance. I got ~3 orders of magnitude speedup by porting an 'optimized' vba/excel app to C#. The 'optimization' consisted of using temp vars instead of cells during calculations and disabling screen refreshes which were combined for about 1 magnitude of speedup.

So that explains why so many funds are tanking right now! :) Chris Meech I am Canadian. [heard in a local bar] When no one was looking, every single American woman between the ages of 18 and 32 went out and got a tatoo just above their rumpus. [link[^]]

I just projectile-regurgitated my Monday morning coffee into the adjacent cubicle. That pun is so foul I'm going to have to send it to my step-dad (a punster of ancient and ill-repute in his own right).

We have a trader here at work that has one of the most amazing excel sheets I have ever seen. He wrote an entire mortgage bond pricing application in excel. It is really pretty amazing. Just resently a team in our group rolled out an actual application that was based off of his spreadsheet.

;-P Sonar works in air as well. Besides, it's RS232 connected, and the computer doesn't even recognise that it's there.
