No you're fine to. I'm just interested to see what a lifestyle of sitting behind a computer for 40 hours (or more) a week has done to shape your opinions about health and exercise. So you definitely count. I'm also trying to weed out the low to mid twenty-somethings that have a VO2^Max that's infinite and that has been with them from youth. I want to hear from older people who fight for health daily using exercise and nutrition to stay focused, energetic and healthy.

Well, I just turned 47 on Saturday so I'm definitely in your survey target age range... At home I have a treadmill, an exercise bike, some free weights, and a http://www.versaclimber.com/VC_CM.htm[^] (not including the girl) which is currently collecting dust in the garage. I try to spend 30 mins each weekday morning on the treadmill (not always successful) followed by some weights. In the evenings I'm currently on the exercise bike while watching the idiot box (sometimes TV shows, sometimes DVD movies). I'm going to build a shed (large room actually) in the back yard and move all my exercise equipment out there and start using it on a rotating basis, never using the same cardio/fatburner two evenings in a row. How's that sound? Mike Poz -- modified at 18:09 Tuesday 20th June, 2006 I forgot to add that I keep some of those rubber tube exercise thingies at work and two or three days a week pick them up and keep them stretchy for about ten minutes in the middle of the day.

Noooooooo, heavens no. To many memory leaks. I had to learn malloc and alloc before anything else. :-D I've always wanted two dogs from the same litter (boy and a girl) to name malloc and alloc. Nobody would get it but I would think it was cool.

I've owned dogs in the past and I have to say I probably never will again. Long story though...:((

So I'm kind of curious. If you exercise 3 times a week or more for at least one hour in an effort to tone/build muscle and trim body fat *AND* you've been programming for more than 5 years vote a 5. (You might think I'm trolling for 5's I'm not I bet this thing gets 1's by majority.) If exercise is a low priority to you and you feel like you don't really need any or you are doing fine for personal health (and you've been programming for at least 5 years) vote a 1. Please only vote here or below not in both. For those of you wondering how I plan on averaging out the weighted nature of voting on the lounge I hear that Math.Round() is a good way to go. I guess it has a problem with Floats though...

I will say, exercise is very important to a healthy lifestyle. Anyone who disagrees is too lazy to exercise – period – and I doubt they even know what it feels like to have real energy (not the caffeine induced crap). Jeremy Falcon

This is what my exercise/healthy history looks like /\/\/\/\/\ i'm currently on the bottom of the swing now. I would definately consider exercise an important party of personal health. But that doesn't mean I've always spent the time doing so. Todd Smith

If I have been programming for 20 years do I get an excercise discount? ;P Not sure how to vote... I get 2 to 3 hours of hiking on the weekend, and about 20-30 minutes 3 or 4 times per week. My doctor is satisfied with that, and I have been getting in better shape combined with a diabetic special diet... so 4? 5? or should I vote lower to make up for 15 years of bad behavior? _________________________ Asu no koto o ieba, tenjo de nezumi ga warau. I exercise 5 or 6 nights a week, but only for 30 or 40 mins (using a combination of some old dumb-bells and an even older ab-cruncher that was gathering dust in the garage). My aim is for a flat stomach by Christmas - I have never had one before - no idea if I even _have_ any abs! :) I also have a cross-trainer - which I _love_ using - but the bloody thing packed up on me last week - one of the metal pedal struts has actually snapped (!) and needs to be welded. That'll teach me to buy the cheapest one I could find... sigh :(

When I started last summer that was one of my goals too. Everything I've read about this suggests that just ab exercises won't cut it - they will strengthen the muscles but not reduce a whole lot of the external fat layer. For that you pretty much have to do some sort of heavy cardio exercise like running/cycling/cross-country skiing/rollerblading/swimming and hit over 20 minutes duration in addition to the ab exercises. Another thought - I've read numerous articles that consistently claim that the various ab exercise machines are mostly a waste of time - the more traditional ab exercise sans machine are more effective, with bicycle sit ups topping the list. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Get rid of the ab-cruncher and do normal crunches: 1. make sure you do crunches and not situps! 2. practice 3 times a week, 50 increasing to 80 repetitions, in series of 10 - 12 repetitions with 5 seconds pause in between 3. maintain form: slow (up 1 second, hold 1/2 second, down 1 second), head and elbows don't move I don't know about "flat", but you'll get an improvement in a few weeks. The ab-cruncher is almost guaranteed to give you no return OGR

When I'm training in the spring and summer, I generally do one or two hour sessions, six days a week. This is usually comprised of at least one two hour run and two one hour runs. I'll bike for two one hour sessions, but once and awhile I'll do a two hour bike ride. Finally on Sunday instead of going to church, I jump in the lake and swim for an hour. I call it baptism day. :) This helps prepare me for two half marathons, two triathlons and a couple of fun 10K runs that I do from June to September each year. Once fall and winter set in though, I cut back to just two runs a week. My goal is to still be doing the triathlons when I reach age 70. By then I might actually win in my age group. :) Chris Meech I am Canadian.

I go in cycles. I was doing well earlier this year with running and weight lifting, but due to a few out-of town trips and weddings this spring has been terrible for keeping with a routine. I'm starting this week with cycling though. I have plans to go on a 20-30 mile ride in 2-3 weeks, so I trying to get back into shape a bit before then. BW

if i don't get to the gym or pool or go for a surf, play golf [read: driving range], frisbee- whatever; just do *something* physical that i really enjoy at least 4 times a week for about 40-90mins... it does affect my ability to sit still and create/concentrate... in this case my end goal is not tone/build/trim but rather engage and have fun- does that still count? :) http://bryanallott.net/

three to five times a week in the gym for an hour. then hiking on the weekend with da wife and kids. been programming since 1976 (ouch 30 years!!) guess that makes me a 5. i have to say that in my particular cube farm, those coders that are more fit are far more productive then those that are slugs. also the more fit are out sick much less. schleprock

Seems such a waste, such a waste. Why not share her with some of your less fortunate breathern? It is a terriable thing to have a girl collecting dust in the garage, set her free, take her out for a walk once and a while.

This is what my exercise/healthy history looks like /\/\/\/\/\ i'm currently on the bottom of the swing now. I would definately consider exercise an important party of personal health. But that doesn't mean I've always spent the time doing so. Todd Smith

Mental Alacrity (SP?) is probably one of the biggest unpublished benefits of a conditioned body. That and you can chase your wife around the house and not get tired until *after* you've caught her a few times instead of before you ever caught her. Sorry... I like to chase my wife around and catch her.:-O

6 AM to 7 AM every day. Doens't get in the way of programming, just go to bed an hour early or hurt the next day. And now, I wouldn't have it any other way.
