I've never yet encountered a company that buys well specified machines for developers. A 3GHz P4 with inadequate cache and 512MB memory seems to be the current bargain basement cop-out. I believe they cost about £300...:doh: By contrast I'd not buy a single core system (especially a P4) for development now...to do so is just a waste of time and money. The one I'm just about to order is a due core Athlon 64 box with 2GB of RAM, 600GB of disk space and twin 19" TFT monitors. We're a small company. Generally we stick with the same hardware until it wears out, or until business requirements change. The developer with the worst hardware currently has a four-year-old P4 1.6GHz, although it does have 768MB of RAM. It's recently started playing up a bit, occasionally locking up completely, though that could be software rather than hardware - I'm not sure the OS has ever been reinstalled on that box, and it's recently had Oracle 10g Developer Edition put on it which is sucking over half a gig of memory. It's just about to be replaced, with a Pentium D I think. That'll then leave my boss's laptop (Dell Latitude D800, 1.4GHz Pentium M I think) as the oldest system, I think it's nearly three years old. Because of the cycles of purchasing computers when new employees start, then when each individual machine develops a fault or becomes too underpowered and is replaced with whatever seems appropriate, we really have a complete mix of hardware. The salesmen that transferred in a management buyout did mostly get the same kit (Dell Celeron M-based laptops, Latitude something-or-other, might be D600) simply because they had the same needs and they were all bought at the same time, the new owner deciding not to buy their old laptops as part of the buyout. We therefore don't have any standard images - everyone builds their system from scratch. Old hardware doesn't die around here, it just gets repurposed. The 1.6GHz P4 I mentioned at the beginning is due to become a full-time Oracle or SQL Server 2005 test server (it will be repaved with a new OS image first). Stability. My project leader just ask to buy me a dual-core/dual-processor for me. Latest in the line of machines. Not really. upgrade cycle of 3-4years. My year and change old laptop's a PM-1600 with 1gig of ram. Devs with need for a high end machine can get it if they convince management of hte need. My understanding is that "need" roughly translates as "runs a local copy of oracle." Since I don't have need at present I'm not angling for a highend laptop. I'd rather wait until I do, so I can have the best possible box for a while. :)

Some times I bet you wish (just like I do) that you could get your hands on the source code of life. I'd add some better error handling for sure but there would be a lot more easter eggs.

Oh yeah! Undo and definitely some good backup and restore operations. Multi-threading would be nice.:-D

thinking about the multithreading bit, you could probably start a whole new breed of metaphysics ;) something along the lines of parallel universes starting on seperate threads, quantum leap drivers or directX that makes everyone pretty. hmm... the more i think about it the more it turns into "the matrix". man, i need to get out more. ...yeah, i heard you.
