I think I'm defective...

I seem to have a problem with regard to layout of the software I write, regardless of whether it is a web application or desktop (especially desktop). Deciding whether to use tabs, mdi, left menu bar, let alone how to group my functionality (what do I put on the tabs), etc. I can bring in someone who has no clue about software development and they seem to be able to just come up with it without any difficulty. Maybe I'm too close to the code and therefore just can't see things from a user perspective. Is there anything out there that will help me?

It just takes practice. I have had much trouble with that as well. Don't get bumbed. I really only do web apps anymore and generally what I try to do is keep it simple. Only one browser window at a time, no popups (only if really necessary), and not to much on one page just keep redirecting. You can always ask a user as well. I try to ask them as much as I can. how vital enterprise application are for proactive organizations leveraging collective synergy to think outside the box and formulate their key objectives into a win-win game plan with a quality-driven approach that focuses on empowering key players to drive-up their core competencies and increase expectations with an all-around initiative to drive up the bottom-line. But of course, that's all a "high level" overview of things --thedailywtf 3/21/06

Mostly true - but most Office versions since Office XP, partly owe their success to new complicated but fancy looking user interfaces. Regards, Nish

Really? I guess that's why Microsoft have changed Office 2007 to be a more task orientated UI again. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]

 I don't know if you are joking or not - but to me Off 2007 UI looks complicated and fancy. It will take a while to get used to it I guess. Regards, Nish

Yep, all you really need is a blank page and an icon like Bob in CPHog to display the keyboard shortcuts. If only. Besides a more tex-orientated view / crossed with CSS would be nice, seperating the content from the layout and all that. But then again I'm a person who likes coding the odd complex project with nothing but SciTE and the command-line (I'd use Notepad , but I really hate the way it doesn't support CTRL+BACKSPACE to delete the previous word).
The Welsh will always support two teams: The Welsh, and anyone playing England :)

No, I wasn't joking (one time only deal). I think the new UI is fantastic, very task orientated. Just the functionality you can do in the current context is available. It's different, but it suits the way I think better than previous versions. Michael CP Blog [^] Development Blog [^]
