Anyone here record/make their own music?

I am trying to figure out what kind of sound card to get for the task. I don't want to break the bank, but I want a quality card that will allow me to use a variety of different inputs (midi, analog, digital) at quality rates. btw: I had a Sound Blaster Live! Platinum before and it was horrid. Bonus question: Anyone know of some good software to write drum tracks (not a looping program with samples, something with full drum kits). yes. but i tend to use my analog 4-track for tracks (with my trusty Alesis drum machine, when i need it). i only use my computer for mastering. then i use Cakewalk Pro. i've never had an issue with sound cards - probably because there's so much noise and hiss coming from the 4-track that any sound card issues are buried. :) -c

Well, a few recording studios I've been to use a solid digital system now without DAT tapes. One in particular uses Pro Tools (on WinNT) but I am unsure about the sound card. The product is amazing due to the insanely expensive mixer, high quality mirophones, and record space. But I am sure that a high quality sound card is a must! Your program is very nice. The interface is a little hard to work with though. I found it quite hard to move the little dial exactly where I wanted it. I wish I'd known that before - the new system I built myself for Christmas has the same card, and I can't get a decent recording off my guitar! Too much 60Hz hum, and no apparent way to suppress it... I have been suspicious of the cheesy little cord that comes with the pickup, but maybe I've been hunting the problem in the wrong place???

Let's put it this way: If you are running Win2k, forget about it. The driver support is horrible. I don't wish to run XP or ME and I certainly won't downgrade to 98. I get a terrible amount of "whitenoise" at odd moments and things are generally poor. Well, one of our companies is a 48 track project studio, Barefoot Recording. In addition to a dedicated console, etc., we use Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 for MIDI drums with the Roland JV-2080 for the sound module. The latter will be a bit expensive for your tastes, but the nice thing about using Cakewalk for MIDI drums is that you can compose in a staff view and actually write music. If you want 32nd note triplets across 4 toms, that's exactly what you write. When we're not tracking live drummers, that's what we use. Regarding Pro Tools, you don't want to buy the Mix Plus or HD systems for the NT platform, only for Macs (these are $10-$50k systems). However, the Pro Tools Digi 001 system for PCs is an excellent bang for the buck. It's around $900 on the street and comes with a card you plug into your PC which interfaces to an external audio section. We use it and it's a toaster - you plug it in, it just works. Additional audio software that we're real happy with is Cool Edit Pro for all the standard audio editing stuff. It's only two or three hundred bucks and is great stuff. Lastly, for a moment of shameless self promotion, if there are those among you who play in bands and make your own self produced CDs, look into another of our companies, www.NotOnTheRadio.com. We sell music, t-shirts, etc. for bands who don't have record deals. We also have a Promoters program that lets people make extra money by sending us bands or customers (you don't need a web site, it's not an affiliate link type thing). We've just launched the site recently, and need to start getting bands signed up & product in stock (we don't charge any setup fees). We're currently limited to doing business just in the US. However, that's only temporary. Once we've got things going for a while, we'll be looking into the hoops we have to jump through for international business as well. Er, end shameless plug... There are two tricks here: 1) Use the arrow keys after clickin a knob (sorry, they don't show focus) 2) Once you grab the knob, you can drag anywhere.. you don't have to stay on the knob.
