Agreed - the Australians played a great game, it sucks they got a bad call by the ref. He should be expelled from the WC. ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! When a player is on the ground he is no longer in play, he cannot be penalised unless he strikes at the opposition player. The ref is an incompetent wanker, though we have been shafted in everyone of the 4 matches we have played. Ohh we've seen many examples of idiotic decisions lately. Yesterday's Portugese game was a typical example. The referees are there to watch over the players, but who watches over the referrees? It stinks and it is ruining the games. It definitely made a farce of yesterday's game. Its a shame you can't call for a substiture referree mid-game.

We have the same problem with Superbowl refs for (gridiron) football. And if you're connected with any team that gets boned by a bad call, you're not allowed to say anything to the ref because they're "god" when it comes to the game and enforcement of the rules. I think that whenever a ref makes a bad call, regardless of the game, they should suffer being the target of some kind of penalty shot sans any kind of shielding. "So Let me repeat..." No.. No.. let me retort. You conveniently left out that our final qualifying matches were against Uruguay. So, we had every right to be there considering we beat the Japanese 3-1, the same team that beat India 7-0 (yep that's seven to nothing:laugh:) in the qualifiers.

From a lot of the commentary by people in the know, I'm getting the feeling the problem lies with the FIFA bureaucratic rules, rather than the referee themselves. They are specifically being told to 'crack' down and have a zero-tolerance approach to the game. The problem with that is that all this is killing the entire spirit of the game. Yes, we know that referees are invaluable during the game. We need the yellow/red cards to stamp out all the fouls, blatant dives and general cheating that happens during a high pressure game (and we all can point our fingers to one or two players in this WC that are repeat offenders). But a little bit of tolerance and common sense is also necessary! I say bring back the likes of Colina[^]. He had the respect of the players. Besides, the players know if they misbehaved, he would drag them back to his lair and steal their souls: Skelator[^]

I have to say that I agree with Michael (though not as intensely!). The penalty may have existed, but not on that challenge. Maybe the ref was positioned at an angle that made the 'dive' seem a credible foul, but from the replays on the tele, it was no where near a solid foul, hence a penalty. I think the ref just didn't want to spend another 30mins on the pitch, so just gave the penalty to finish the game.:~

No. I watched the whole game. Italian footballers, more or less all match long pretending to be fouled when just falling over. Sometimes falling over themselves without an Aussie in sight, and the nearest Aussie penalised. And that is CHEATING.
