When most people from the East Coast find out how inexpensive real estate is here they usually have to pull their jaw up from the floor.

I can imagine. I visited an old college friend who had moved back home to Kansas. When I found out that the gorgeous houses in his parent's neighborhood cost <= $500,000 I though they were pulling my leg. But then again, the houses were in Kansas. There ain't much cookin' in KS.

I live across from a lake, have almost 3000 sq. feet and my house cost $170,000. PLUS I don't have to pay an income tax in South Dakota and the property taxes are cheaper on this side than in Iowa or Minnesota. I find it sad that I probably have less of a mortgage payment than you pay in rent!:sigh:

For the Americans on the board, our Independence Day is next week. What are your favorite things to do on the holiday? What do you plan on doing this year? For those of you non-Yanks, when is Indepence Day in your country (if you have one) and what are some of the customs?

Going out to Grapevine Lake (in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area) and watch the fireworks show.

Canada day tomorrow, and in Quebec, also known as "Moving Day" when most of the appartment leases end. normally, not much is going on, some parades, some fireworks, some BBQ, some political bickering, some out door shows, ...

Ummm... Sorry about that.... (If you didn't know - I saw a documentary a wee while ago that explained it was based on a Scots law thing centuries ago. The Scots and French were very close allies for many centuries and imported a lot of things from each other - And it then got imported into Quebec. I don't know if France still has this law, but we got rid of a long long time ago.)

Listen Leckey, no matter how bad you want me to, I'm not moving out to South Dakota. ;P (just kidding)

What on Earth is sad about that?! If having a good sized house on a lake is what you want (and it doesn't sound like a bad thing to want), then you should feel lucky to have it! Good for you. But then again, as most people discover over time, the desire to be near Me can be overwhelming, and lead you astray from a more reasonable path in life. :-> Some say it's my animal magnetism, some say it's just plain good looks... (for those of you just joining in, I tease Leckey, so don't start flaming me for being some kind of weirdo egomaniac!) Josh

So did the movie Braveheart annoy Scots or make them happy that people got to learn some of the rough history of Scotland?

A bit of both. It is good that more people know something of our history. But it is annoying that there are many historical inaccuracies. For example, although Wallace and Bruce were around at the same time history does not record them ever having met. Wallace is reputed to have stayed silent during his execution (and did not yell anything). And then, there is this monstrosity![^]

Is property that valuable in SD? Or are there other extenuating circumstances? Don’t get me wrong that sounds like a very nice house, and on a lake. Which would be very cool, but I was under the impression (perhaps falsely) that property was much cheaper in SD than MN.

I have to work. :(( What makes it worse is the “Taste of Minnesota” isn’t to far away from where I work. So I get to deal with all of the crowds while en-route to work. Perhaps this will be the year where people realize that roughly almost $7 dollars for a bottle of water is too expensive and $5 bucks for mini donuts just inst worth it. X|

I've been vegetarian for about 6 months now. I don't really miss it that much, but a good ham sandwich is a divine pleasure. As far as being a carnivore sushi is where it's at. Mmmmmmmm raw meat. Though everytime I think about it I just have to remember colesterol, my gut and my goal to have a 6 pack by the end of the year, plus the mushroom risotto that my wife made last night and those urges pass.

I see you are off that wonder bread crack. I hope you had some mustard on that. A sandwich on rye without mustard is a real shame.

I think it was because Scotts actually owned a lot (most) of buildings and they imported that leasing rule in Quebec. Denevers
