Probably because most people don't mind if their cats eat the mice in the house, but generally don't like them eating their pet fish ;)

Seriously: it is because a lot of people eat cat and dog food as a main part of their diet. That is why, in the UK, the standards for the meat that can go into cat and dog food products is higher than many of the meat that goes into processed frozen foods for human consumption. Most of that meat comes from either chickens (whole damaged ones that can't be fresh-packed and certain less desirable body parts), ditto with beef products*, or the remains from fish processing. It is the same reasoning behind all the extra vitamins and minerals that are added to baked beans - they are cheap and easier for poorer families to afford, but are still able to provide a reasonably healthy diet. The jelly in pet food is full of goodness. * Dog food made from beef products is of the same standard as the beef that goes into big-name burgers.

When I saw, that my sister gave her cat some fresh meat, I asked her, if she's crazy now. But she proofed me, that this is cheaper. Cans of food for animals are not realy cheap. But of course they are easy to handle: you don't have to cut anything the food doesn't go waste for months.

Watched my cat eating a mouse - the dish with fresh food was 2 meters away.
