I would actually go with How the West Was Won over The Song Remains The Same. The companion DVD for it is outstanding also. (It's just called Led Zeppelin DVD and does a better job of capturing their live performance than Song Remains the Same did.)

I have no choice or preference of Metal/Rock Album, but the reason I am replying to your post is that I thought it was from CG. Somehow, when I hear about metal my mind automatically associates it with CG.

For starters and in no particular order... AC/DC - If You Want Blood... Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East Deep Purple - Made in Japan Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous

Iron Maiden - easily the best live band ever. (With Bruce Dickinson that is - Bayley and DiAnno are really bad live performers). Live after Death and Live at Donnington are my favorite live albums.

If you like Made in Japan, you should really own Made in Europe, which is from the Burn tour (David Coverdale and Glen Hughes). It's harder to find (considered an import in the US), but it's an intense performance. And although it's considered blues rather than rock, Stevie Ray Vaughn's Live Alive is inspired.

No sleep til hammersmith !!! As Live after death has the famous 'scream for me hammersmith', I guess Hammersmith is the common thread for great live albums.

Yes, Live after Death is good. Not as keen on Iron Maiden as I am on Judas Priest though. But I did see Iron Maiden live before they released their first album. This was at Surrey University in the UK. They were supporting a group called Samson whose lead singer was Bruce Dickinson (called Bruce Bruce then). :)

I think I heard it once. Not as good as Made in Japan, where Purple had their definitive lineup IMO.
