Ok, I will admit it, I applied a budget constraint and only spent a thousand dollars but I have ordered my new PC. I will assembly it when it arrives. I am so excited! To be honest I have never built a PC from scratch for my own personal use :( I am so looking forward to popping this cherry. The specs are lame but I will share them anyway: Processor: Intel P940 RAM: 2GB Paired 667 Video: 7600 GT HDD: 2 WD 160GB 7k with 16meg buffer to be RAID 0 PS: 550 Antec (prolly overkill but I may replace the video card) With any luck it may actually be able to run windows vista when it is released. (BTW, I got all my software dirt cheap and legally!)

I know this is true. I've heard it repeated a million times. I've been messing around inside PC's for ~18 years now and I have to admit that I don't really take very careful precautions, yet I've never had anything pop on me. Trust me, I've spent a LOT of time inside PC's. The biggest precaution I take is that, when possible I leave the PC plugged in while I mess with it so that the chasis is grounded. This isn't always possible though and still I've never destroyed anything due to ESD. The last prebuilt desktop PC I owned I purchased in 1996, and even that was customized pretty quickly. I've built them for friends, for work, continuous upgrades at home... never any problems. Hell, half the time I lay the things down on carpet to work on it. Has anyone here had lots of ESD trouble?

IIRC, most machines made within the last few years will be able to run Vista. Personally, I'm waiting for some DirectX 10 video cards before I upgrade my machine.

All it takes is for you to touch the case before doing anything and that leaves you pretty well covered. Some people with dry skin for example have lots of problems so there is luck invovled. Elaine :rose:

With ATX power supplies you have to make sure you've got the switch on the power supply flipped off if you have it plugged in. Otherwise, there is power to the mainboard and possibly some other components as well.

Back in the day, I once added a CP/M 80-column card to an Apple IIe - while the computer was powered on. I got lucky and nothing bad happened.
