Make sure it's installed. My nVidia card has hardware MPEG support, but the downloadable player on their site doesn't install a driver for it. Just make sure it's there, or see if a software based player doesn't crash at least.

Yeah, I guess it's not installed, I sure can't see it anywhere in the start menu or add/remove programs. But I thought I downloaded another player that used software and it didn't work either.

Perhaps, but it crashes in the exact same way, I thought media player reported inteligently that it needed a codec ?

It should, but sometimes things don't always work out like that. :-D

Well, if you follow Jörgen's link for PowerDVD, I know that one is software based. Whether or not you buy it is up to you, but at least during the trial period you can see if it'll play your DVDs. If so, that has to be the issue. If not, then you're SOL. :-D

BTW, what video card are you using, is it an nVidia? If so, they have special software to allow you to play DVDs in media player, with hardware MPEG support. It should install needed drivers as well for your card.

It's software based and slow. If he can get the hardware decoding working, that's the better option.

Slow? I haven't noticed anything like that. Sure, it might take a few cycles extra to decode the video stream, but hey, it's not 1998 anymore. Any modern computer handles DVD video streams with ease.

The download Jorgen gave me worked, so I guess that program installs a software decoder and I need to make the hardware decoder work. Media Player no longer crashes, it gives me a message that it can't play DVDs and I should change my screen resolution.

Well, if it's using a software decoder, it's not interfacing with the hardware one on the video card at all. But, like he just said, on a modern system, you probably won't notice too much of a performance hit going software based.

Becuase you don't have drivers for a hardware decoder installed. MP isn't software based. Either way, glad you have something working at least.

They do, and it annoys the hell out of me. If you don't want to fork over $30, then you'll need to find their player/media player plug-in on the CD for your video card. It's completely seperate from the normal display drivers (at least that's the way it is with my card). Otherwise, you'll have to pay for it from their website. Once they are installed, everything works great. I think they should make it a bit easier to use the features of the video card though.

Ahh. I get it now (I hope). Well, the stuff I was talking about was on the CD the came with a straight-up nVidia card. I don't know about OEM CDs just using the nVidia chipsets. If you can't find anything on the CD, it's always worth trying to use that MP plug-in from nVidia (there's a free trial). If you're gonna pay to play, may as well at least if you can get hardware based decoding going first.
