What (on earth) is Code Project !!!!!?

In one word? Awesome. In a few more words? CP is the only "online community" (that term is used a lot, and I don't use it out of habit, but it just seems to fit somehow) that I know of where people actually care for each other. I don't know why it is so different to everywhere else, but it just is. The regulars are there to give each other advice through the lows and to rejoice in the highs, but also just to chat and be good friends. There's a bit of everything here, all types of people that generally share a common interest that keeps them together. I think the fact that most people use their real name for their login (somewhat unusual these days) helps a lot too.

Ryan - you've made me feel somehow dirty, guilty for hiding behind a naff tag for all these years. Today, I feel enlightened, joyous and free. I have finally come out!!!! Oh you guys......:-D

No MFC either. I dont use even the slightest bit of Win32 also. I never build GUIs. I write Plugins for AutoCAD. I use what they call ObjectARX. What will you say for that?:):)

There's nothing wrong with that. Welcome! :) (I write plug-ins myself...but for Visual Studio rather than AutoCAD).

Well........ I have had it today. I have been around this place for like a six months now..... or may be less, but I am getting quite glued to the place. I know of so many people have been around for longer. But get this feeling that some of them havent just "been around". There is this "thing" they have for each other. Jeremy Falcon, for example, always seems to know how many beers Christian had gulped before he decided to change the CP layout. David stone often reminds Chris Maunder of the historical moment when his grammar started going all over the place. I feel as if you people have a history. Perhaps you guys robbed a bank together. Or played in the same band for college. Or is this what CP does to you? Or am I jumping the guns? What ever it is, what is it exactly? What on earth is codeproject?
Abhishek
LOL you're as addicted as the rest of us now. I've been here since 2001...amazing really! You are right though...there's a sense of community here that's pretty special. Although a few of us have met each other from time to time (the CPian gathering in London a couple of years back was real fun), the majority of people haven't...but that doesn't detract from it one bit. This is a great place to hang out and learn - and not just about code. :rose:

Your post just made me check my profile, and I've been here for 4,5 years now. Pretty amazing. I am one of the "silent" posters, knowing quite a lot of people and their history, having seen people coming, going, people who are still there and who will probably never leave, and nobody ever noticing me. What made Code Project so special is that people trust other people here so much that they sometimes speak about very private things, ask the community about choices that can somwhow influence their life (Should I take this job ? Should I leave for the US or stay here ? ...). I have a pretty good list of names from the Code project of people that I could surely ask about important things and get a real good useful answer (the contrary being true as well  ). I have a pretty good list of articles and code stuff that I can use and reuse. Plus people here are really good at what they do. Really.

Do you think it's because we have The Lounge and The Soapbox where people kinda divulge their personal lives, their political stance, their hobbies, favourite food, and everything else? You know the saying, you can't love 'em if you don't know 'em :-D
"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine." - Thomas Jefferson "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin Edbert Sydney, Australia

The Lounge, yes. The Soapbox is abhorrent and deplorable and I wouldn't lament its passing at all. But I guess it has it's place if you're into masochism and other more sadistic forms of entertainment...

Actually, there are a few I know of where the people care for each other - mum's & babies forums - but they go too far the other way. And some of the mum's are a couple of sandwiches short of a picnic. I can't tell you the number of times I've had to explain that a month is not 4 weeks, and if it were then on a child's first birthday they'd actually be 13 months old... . It's good to find a forum where the people actually care for each other but still don't mind debating or even arguing with each other over various topics. And then there's the articles and programming forums :)
A mum and loving it!

OK, I'll bite. How do you take participate then? I would have thought that access to a computer of some sort was a pre-requisite of joining CP Graham

No, they used ski-masks. The stockings were for quite another reason ;) Graham

While he may not own a computer, lots of public libraries offer free web access.

I'd say there is a point at which caring becomes not caring, if you know what I mean. Caring doesn't mean just agreeing or consoling, but disagreeing and debating as well. It must be a balance. Always. That's what friends are for - to support when needed, to chastise when needed, to laugh when needed and to cry when needed. The best friends are those that can do everything; they're the ones that are loved and cherished the most.

 I imagine some of them would have a hard time understanding that. But then again, when you get your first child, a little logic seems to leave your brain while you get your head around it. Or so I've heard anyway :sigh:. Although it's more that other things take priority and seem more important. Such as the little one ;). Parenting never leaves a person unchanged...
