A while ago I installed some trial software (can't remember what it was it was that un-useful) which associated the XML file ending, amongst others, with it, overwriting the association with XML Spy. When I uninstalled it, I managed to re-associate the file endings with XML Spy. However the file icon in explorer for the XML file ending stubbornly refuses to use the nice XML Spy icon, although the other file endings such as DTD and XSL files are OK. I suspect there is a registry item somewhere that controls this. Can anyone help? I'm on a Win2K machine Graham My signature is not black, just a very, very dark blue

Microsoft's Tweak UI has a rebuild icons option to fix any icons still in cache.

open explorer, goto Tools -> Folder Options, select File Types tab, select XML in the list of extensions, click Advanced button. you should now be able to change the icon.

        undefined

But when I select XML in the list, the advanced button disappears and it allows me to change the program association (from XML) or to restore to its default But restoring to its default seem to work. Need to see if this survives a reboot (I thought that I'd tried this before) [Edit]OK - it survived. I feel fairly stupid now, since it was so easy. Thanks very much.[/Edit] -- modified at 10:30 Friday 4th August, 2006
