...ever actually been caught at the airport security checkpoints? I was trying to think back to around 9/11 and I couldn't think any. I know some people have been caught with guns there (Like Jimmy Johnson who was coach of the Dallas Cowboys football team) but not really considered terrorist, idiots maybe, but not terroists. Just Curious Joe Q

Sometimes they catch little old ladies in wheelchairs.

Yeah, but those little old ladies have built up a lot of anger and regret. They're just looking for an excuse to unload.

I've also seen them catch: 4 year old (about) girl in leg braces Twin 8 year old girls (about), not sure why. My friend with an implant for pain in her back (she has a medical letter of authorization but they had to call the doctor before they'd let her go) However, I forgot about my leatherman foldable pliers once, but I got through with that. sad but true

I think a year after 9/11 I assembled a desk and put the 6" screwdriver I was using in my jacket pocket. I forgot about it and a couple days later got on a flight with it in my pocket without realizing. The metal detectors didn't even pick it up.

I haven't heard of any, but I don't believe that catching terrorists red handed was ever the goal in this particular situation. When it's widely publicized that they're searching for guns, box cutters and the like before you board, that actively discourages terrorists from employing the "walk on" method. The fact that none are caught can be viewed either as evidence that the search is unnecessary or proof that it's effective, depending on the desired spin.

Are only there to appease the masses. Even if the security accieved 99.9% success rate in screening that still leaves (Assuming 1 million passengers per day ( as small guess) 1000 persons through unscreened. Considering that terrorists are likely to attempt to defeat the system they have even better chances of getting through it. No restriction of freedom will reduce the threat of terror and I wish people would finally understand that so we can all get back to our lives.

I figure it was to make us "feel" safe. Eventhough I know that anyone with brains would go around security in one way or another. I don't feel any safer, but I get a lot of reading done while I'm waiting in line.

You know it's a federal offense to record conversations with airport security personnel, right? :-D
