Today's Shower Poll reminded me ..

of a joke that was told at my Dad's funeral. Years ago while lying wounded in bed during WWII, a nurse came up and asked my dad if he needed a sponge bath. My father responded "No thanks, I've taken care of that myself". The nurse was surprised and asked, "How did you accomplish that?". To which my dad replied, "Well, first I wet the cloth and start with my face and wash down as far as possible. Then I rinse the cloth and wipe my feet and wash up as far as possible". The nurse smiled and said, "Oh, I understand". My father continued by saying, "Finally, I rinse the cloth again and I wash possible". :) The man knew how to put a grin on anyone's face.

Some people know how to make anyone smile anytime. My dad sounds kinda like yours in a way... Mt grandpa died about 15 years ago (my dad's dad). After the funeral, the immediate family was sitting on the back porch of my grandma's house... mostly comforting each other. The subject of funeral costs came up and my aunt said that the vet had just sent in a check. My dad didn't miss a beat before saying, "Oh crap, did we send him to the wrong place?!?" Everyone, including grandma, burst into laughter. Sometimes, laughter is the best medicine. For those not familiar with the slang, grandpa fought in World War II and is thus a "vet" or "Veteran". American Veterans get money towards burial/funeral services. "vet" is also slang for veterinarian (where you take your pets when they are sick).

The only profound thing I remember my dad saying is when I was complaining about an ear infection. He said, "If you were a horse, we'd havta shoot 'ya."
Just as well he thought you were more valuable than a horse.

Very true. Nothing helps you through things like laughing. Especially when grieving. Good story to remember both your dad and grandpa. :)
