Hey anybody here use a remote backup service for their pc's? I've been searching around and looks like you can get 5-10 gb for around $20 a month. Anybody doing this and if so who are you using?

I don't use them because: - I don't trust the providers (I'm afraid they could stole my data, especially because I have "secret" stuff about my work in my PC; call me paranoid) - It would take ages to upload the data (I have almost 18 GB of data) - In case of damage to my machines, it would take ages to download the data These are my opinions. :)

If you know how to setup ftp server and has an externally accessible computer. It can be done for free. Check this[^] out on this site. We use it for development and website files synchronization and backup (with version info). However you need to spend sometime to set it up since its free. (By the way, don't be confused by the article's title, this program can be run three modes, one of them is on command line so that a batch file can be used to run it on certain schedule). And (I know what are you thinking;)), if you are interested, we also has products/services partially ready (not yet opened) that let a user to store their files on third party servers or event distributed on the internet securely, namely, the files are encrypted and the access right to them can be distributed and exchanged by the owners easily ... -- modified at 12:36 Wednesday 16th August, 2006

I highly recommend Mozy[^]. I use it for my personal backups and have several small business using it in addition to their local backups. Excellent service for the price.
Found on Bash.org [erno] hm. I've lost a machine.. literally _lost_. it responds to ping, it works completely, I just can't figure out where in my apartment it is.

It seems great, I'll check it out. BTW, isn't there a way to use FTP or HTTP instead of their (nice) program, at least for download?

I'm not sure. I thought you could download the backups directly from the web interface. The backup app they made is awesome though. I love the throttle feature.

Is that all data files, or is some of it system files?

Only data. I don't backup the system.

Wow that looks pretty awesome. That's the least expensive one I've seen. Having just had to pay a ton to recover a lot of old pictures off a drive, this looks great. thanks!

thanks for the suggestion. I would go this route if I had a server somewhere that I trusted (i.e. not one at my house). I have not yet gotten to the point of needing to rent a server from serverbeach or something, so..

I'm using iBackup (http://www.ibackup.com[^]) now for my personal backup. 5G for around $100 a year - not too bad. Their backup program has an option to encrypt with 256-bit AES as well before sending to their servers. I've used X-Drive before, another online backup provider. My advice is to not consider them - I cancelled my account about 3 weeks into usage due to shoddy behavior, crashes, and timeouts.
