Degree?

This may not be well received, but here it is. What degree(s) do you have, is it technical or not, just trying to find out where the majority of developers stand. I have found that a lot have technical backgrounds but not always directly related to information technology. What do you say? I don't personally feel that a technical background is always required, however can help. Nick Parker
I attained a B.Sc (Hons) Computational Linguistics in 1999, there are alot of very good people with little or no formal qualifications in IT. However there are alot of people running around with a few MCP's achieved at a government training course or a conversation master degree in computing (did a degree in Music, then a masters in computing). These guys skills are mostily (but not always) shakey at best, they cheapen my hard earned qualification ... it bothers me, really it does. :( Regards Ray "Je Suis Mort De Rire"

I was really surprised that they don't require a degree. Very interesting! As for me: busy doing a degree (BSc comp. sci). I've worked with a lot of ppl that had degrees and I couldn't have picked that up from their work necessarily. I don't think that it's any kind of guarentee of ability. None! I stopped attending classes my third year, second semester of college. I realized that I was mostly wasing my time, and would be of better use doing real code, not listening to how instructors, who never wrote any real code in their lives, thought real code should be written. (Note that I worked as a programmer before college, worked as a programmer for my first college, and worked as the assistant SysAdm for my second college. The summer before my third year of college, I worked as a developer for Prodigy. After doing that much real-world work, you start to realize that, in some respects, the college courses were a step backward from where I was, and far from where I wanted to be! Since then, I have never looked back, nor have I been forced to associate or work with those that think that a degree is The Beginning of knowledge/ability, rather than one of many beginnings. B.S. M.S. in metallurgical engineering. B.S. and working towards PhD in computer science. Lots of places use educational background as a screening criteria for employment. IMO higher degree -> higher pay.

Mine's an engineering degree in Mining! Yup, drill and blast used to be a high light of my younger days ;P Fortunately, I discovered that man handling users was a much more enjoyable past time that trying to separate copper minerals from zinc minerals. Chris
