Here in the US we have Postal(Zip) Codes in the format of 12345-1234. The first 5 are required, and the last 4 help further sort for individual destinations. Called "Zip plus four". Anyway, I know Canadian codes are usually 6, but have come across a 15 character zip code field and was wondering if there was perhaps a system similar to our Zip+4. I couldn't see anything on Canada Post suggesting another system. Any other countries have use for a 15 character postal code?

we only have four digits ;P. (Which actually is sometimes very annoying when you have to fill in I-net forms where they require a 5 digit zip code)

Postal Code Rant. Ireland, except for the Dublin area, doesn't have postal codes. I live in Waterford city which is in Waterford county. No postal code. The number of websites that force me to enter in Waterford as a postal code is nuts. Some will even say that is an invalid postal code and not let me sign up (I then end up using 90210 as my postal code. Beverly Hills!) So please. If you are working on a system that records postal codes make it optional or let it contain a good number of characters and don't go assuming your ten year old postal code database knows better than people who live in the area. :)

Cool - we've been to Ottawa once - which I thought was a nicer looking city compared to Toronto. And we intend to check out Quebec too (during a long weekend).

I think I remember your telling about the tulip festival. That was too bad, Ottawa is a nice place to visit (usualy). Let me know if you'd like suggestions when you get to plan your Quebec trip!

Brian, Could you reproduce it for us? Canada only has 6 digits... going in order from bigger area in the first digit/letter to your actual street in the last digit. Ontario (11 million people) have PCs starting with K,L,M,N,P (no vowels). Boy... aren't postal codes just the most exciting things to read about? LOL Chad

Yes, but coders going postal are even more fun to read about!

Good observation. I've often wondered what other countries do for postal sorting. From now on every form I design will have a large field marked "Postal Code or 'Waterford'" please.

OT, but when i saw your post i decided to check out the website for FirstLogic, a one-time local software company that does lots of mailing address cleansing-type stuff. Sad to say, they'd apparently been bought by BusinessObjects (purveyors of the crap-tastic CrystalReports app, among other things), and so now have next-to-nothing in the way of useful information on their website. The product (PostalSoft) was originally created by a guy looking to make his wife's job (pre-sorting mail) a bit easier... Kinda sad, really (though i'm sure he made a hefty profit on the sale ;) ).
