That took about 1 minute. Here's my final comment: I've never encountered lying in a software project. I've encountered incompetence, bad estimation (but honestly done), mismanagement, poorly communicated information, etc., but I've never encountered a project in which there is blatant hype or any conscious decision on someone's part to be misleading. Sure there's politics, but I've seen lies as a result of politics, only lots of bickering and stupid decisions. I'm be curious about other people's experiences. Marc

Why are you sure, if we've lied at work, we'd tell the truth in your survey ? :P

This is a very good question (and was one of the very first one which came into my mind )! We are not sure ... but statistically the majority of people who feel strongly about this topic will tell there view (which is maybe not the real truth...). The rest simply does not care enaugh .

Your survey assumes that the answer is yes. In most cases I think you will find the answere is no. People are by and large honest. They can be foolish, mistaken, overly optimistic and still be honest.

Should that be "Sure there's politics, but I've never seen lies as a result of politics, only lots of bickering and stupid decisions." ? I have to agree Marc. I've never come across people lying at work. Plenty of politics, as you say, but not lying.

Rob, The survey is based on a pre-test performed earlier on. It is as well based on former studies and publications in this area. However, you are absolutely right that many people are honest to there bones. Some of them have even been punished for this … Many factors have an influence, for example: Size of the company or team Multi national and cultural distribution The hierarchical position of the survey participant (means how much visibility he has) Whether responsibility over others exists (like a team or project lead who could risk loosing some of his bodies if he does not lie …) and many more ... This is a very complex and controversial topic and was expected to be one.

I answered no to a question but the follow-ups all assumed yes so when I declined to answer I got an error. I clicked X.

The follow-ups will not be calculated in the statistic if you have selected NO. The survey will not blend out questions for you even if you select NO. Instead just skip those (as many many other people did already). Nothing is assumed up-front. What we do is to care about your view. And I can tell you this much : This topic generated a very wide range of opinions. However your input is valid - I understand it could be confusing. If you care just give it another try. Thanks

But I am not retaking a survey that is poorly designed to give possibly invalid results. Use the feedback to design a better survey in the future.
